In Sierra Leone, Minister Returns Bargaining Certificate to Trade Unions

The Minister of Employment and Social Security, Minkailu Mansaray has returned bargaining certificates to trade union organizations. The ceremony took place on Tuesday 25th November 2008 at the conference hall of the Ministry of Labor, New England Ville in Freetown.

In is opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Lamin V Kanneh said bargaining certificates were withdrawn from trade union organizations by the previous government in order to undertake restructuring process. He however stated that since that did not materialize at that time, the certificates had been useless in the ministry. He disclosed that the process is now ongoing but that President Koroma had instructed that the certificates be returned to the affected organizations.

He used the occasion to entreat on the unions to ensure that they are produced when demanded. He described bargaining certificate as the instrument that gives the union life and motivation to carry out their responsibilities effectively. He however, added that the labour movement serves as a catalyst of change that will direct the mode of affairs of the all unions. He called on all to work in accordance with the law to push the country forward.

The President of Sierra Leone Labour Congress, Mohamed A Deen commended President Ernest Bai Koroma and the Minister for handing back their respect and dignity as they could now carry out their role in the country with confidence and courage. On behalf of trade unions, he expressed thanks and appreciation to the government, and vowed that they would work hard in the interest of development.
