ACC Ropes 3 Big Fishes

Reports say the former Acting Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS), Kashopeh Wellington, former Accountant of the SLBS, Madona Druscilla Cole an Chief Clerk at Immigration Department, Alhaji Alie Badara Seisay were arraigned on Monday 24th November 2008 in the High Court for Various offences under the Anti Corruption Act 2000 as amended. Wellington and Cole were arraigned on a charge of misappropriation of public revenue contrary to section 12 (1) of the Anti Corruption Act 2000 as amended. Seisay was arraigned on two count charges of soliciting and accepting an advantage contrary to section 8(1) (a) of the Anti Corruption Act 2000 as amended. All three accused persons pleaded not guilty of the offences.

US Embassy Grants $13m For PAGE

The Ambassador of the United States of America to Sierra Leone, June Carter Perry is said to have recently launched the Promoting Agriculture, Governance and Environment (PAGE) 4-year, $13 million program funded by the US through the Agency for International Development (USAID). The program aims to harness lessons learned to promote security, governance and economic development through democracy and institutional reforms. The US believes programmes that address development issues holistically have better chances for success.

UBA Storms Burkina Faso

Reports monitored from local tabloids have intimated that the United Bank of Africa (UBA) has spread it tentacles to Burkina Faso. It is reported that the Bank has captured 8 African countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Uganda Cameroon and Burkina Faso. The state owned Banque International du Burkina Faso (BIB) reportedly opined that the establishment of UBA in the country will strengthen the Pan-African presence there. Reports say there are many other Banks in the country but the establishment of UBA also received an overwhelming welcome.

Zain Received 2 AfricaCom Awards

One of the most reputable and reliable mobile telecommunications company, Zain is reported to have received two best awards in Cape Town from AfricaCom. The two awards are for the Best African Initiative Campaign and the Best Marketing Campaign of the Year. The ceremony was attended by many business leaders from all major telecom operatives in Africa. While receiving the awards, Zain Africa CEO, Chris Gabriel told his audience that the rebranded Celtel to Zain is widely appreciated by various customers from around Africa because of it affordable prices.

MMCET In A Deplorable State

It is reported that the Students Hostels at the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET) is in an appalling state. Students are said to have complain on several instances to the appropriate authorities about the awful conditions of both the toilet and water facilities, to which no action is taken. The college student union president, Gabriel A.G Lombi is said to have informed newsmen that the college authorities recently received money for repairs, adding that it is rather unfortunate that the situation is yet to be addressed. Concerns of non security in the campus were also raised as alleged incidence of robbery attacks is maintaining a steady pace.

Biriwa Chiefdom Gets Regent Chief

In the wake of the suspension of Paramount Chief Alhaji Dr. Modi Seray Sheriff of the Biriwa Chiefdom, reports filtering in indicate that a new Regent Chief, Murray Brima has been appointed. It could be recalled that the chiefdom was recently the subject of chieftaincy brouhaha that culminated in the suspension of the former chief. The appointed chief will be in charge of the affairs of the chiefdom until an election is held. According to reports, the suspended chief was crowned by the erstwhile government without following due procedures.

Child Abuse Lands Man 64 In Court

One Gbassay Bangura is reportedly answering to a count charge of child abuse at the Magistrate Court No. 3. The accused, who claimed to have abducted the victim (name withheld) since October 5 to 11, is alleged to have sexually abused the little girl for five days at Tengbeh Town. The victim is reported to have told the court that she lost her business money, adding that while crying, she was tricked by the accused. She alleges further that the accused took her to an abandoned vehicle where she was sexually abused for five days, with her mouth and feet tied up.
