In Sierra Leone, Windfall for Disabled Children in Freetown

A Non Governmental Organization, Movement Against Poverty (MAP) Sierra Leone, in collaboration with Stitching Lillian Funds on Wednesday 26th November 2008 brought smiles and joy to eight disabled children drawn from various communities in Freetown with the donation of basic school and learning materials to each, including a cash scholarship of Le.450,000 (Four hundred and fifty thousand leones) each to funds their academic pursuit.

In an august ceremony held at their Wilberforce head office in Freetown, the country director of the NGO, Andrew Vandy Swaray called on the disabled children not to give up but to remain steadfast in their educational ventures. He said they must discard the wrong notion held by many that disability is inability. He cited an example of a disabled man who is presently the bread winner of a settled family in that part of the city.

He also admonished the parents and guardians of those unfortunate children to tirelessly support them as according to him, they need special attention to grow up as responsible future leader of this country.

On behalf of the funding donors, Mr. Tapia Kabia, the National Coordinator for Stitching Lillian Funds pledged their continuous support to needy children, with special reference to the disabled in the country. He said one of the main objectives of their organization was to ensure that disabled children gain access to quality education medical facilities.

Amongst the items donated were exercise books and textbooks, pens, pencils crayons, rulers and other learning materials.

A beneficiary parent, Mr. Kemoh Sillah thanked the donors on behalf of the children for alleviating their plight. He promised that as parents, they would always give their support to the children.
