In a press release issued on Wednesday 26th November 2008 by the Government of Sierra Leone, the public and all cinema operators are hereby informed that the proliferation of commercial cinemas, especially in the western area, is becoming a concern to the Ministry of Information and Communication.

In that regard according to the release, the ministry has learnt with dismay that most of these cinema and super sport centers are not registered and do not pay taxes. Secondly,

They are in the habit of playing uncensored films, especially showing on screen live pornographic, crime and violence films that are not good for the youth and young people of this nation

The release further says that these centres are housing games and gambling stations. In addition to operating under unhealthy situation without the necessary security measures put in place.

The Ministry views the above situation as unacceptable due to the negative consequences they will have on the youth and children of this nation, the release continues. The ministry also believes that these uncontrolled and negative entertainment ventures are seriously connected with increased student hooliganism, smoking (marijuana etc), child-prostitution, voodooism/juju during public or school programmes, and the worst scenarios being poor performance in public examination.

The release says the ministry will want to inform the general public that even though a Union has now been formed to champion the welfare of cinema operators, some are still operating as they like without any consideration of the laws and moral ethics of our different communities.

In view of the above, it continues, the ministry has no alternative but to wage a massive campaign against unruly and illegal cinema operators in this country, starting from the Western Area. Therefore, officials of the Ministry and the National Union of Cinema Entertainers (NUCE), in collaboration with line ministries/ institutions will undertake a full Sweep the City off Illegal Cinemas exercise.

In conclusion the release says ministry has therefore, given two weeks grace period for all illegal cinema operators to join the Union (NUCE) before the 21st November 2008 or face the full force of the law. Now operation to sweep the city off illegal cinemas has officially started.
