Lies About Sababu Cannot Save APC

Here we go again, as the APC news organ, We Yone, continues to spew forth misinformation to the people of this country in a vain bid to discredit some targeted functionaries of the erstwhile SLPP regime and the party itself. In its 20th November 2008 publication, the newspaper blazoned a totally misleading headline captioned "SABABU PROJECT: A Gold Mine as Commission exposes Alpha Wurie

The most that could be said about the Justice Semega-Jenneh Commission is that it may have highlighted some designed weaknesses of the Sababu project. It has however, definitely not established any case of misappropriation of public funds or financial malpractices in the operation of the projects funds.

If the allegations contained in the said article are anything to go by, then there should be no reason why the current minister of finance, David Carew should still be holding office; except that the newspaper is suggesting that President Koroma is presiding over a cabal of crooks. For as Senior Partner of the KPMG, the accounting firm entrusted with the management of the Sababu fund, Minister David Carew must have been privy to any misappropriation of funds. He must indeed be a very clever to be able to deceive the Commission, the President and nation he took an oath to serve if he did so and is getting away scotch free. But being clear in his conscience that the Sababu funds were administered with probity and transparency, Minister Carew did not hesitate to delegate his juniors to explain this fact to the Commission, a job they did with flying colours.

While the We Yone newspaper is at liberty to cast slurs on the personalities heading the very administration it is supposed to be promoting, this writer has no such liberty and decency dictates he does not libel people of character and integrity.

Although the bulk of Sierra Leoneans believe that the Commission is a useless waste of time and a witch hunt directed at specific targets, with the former Minister of Education, Science and Technology a kingpin, reporting its proceedings concisely is an obligation every responsible news organ owes this nation, whether it is partisan or not.

So far as the disclosures at the Commission have gone, neither Wurie, the ministry staff, or for that matter the project officials have been implicated in any act of misappropriation.

If however, like the Commission itself, the We Yone fails to differentiate between the Sababu Project funded by the Government of Sierra Leone, the African Development Bank and IDB programme, then it only goes to show that, like the current Minister Minkailu Bah now conveniently nicknamed Ogboni, who declared the ministry a den of corruption even before he had had time to study his work details, the sole purposes of the tirade is to give vent to a long nursed hate.

Such a hate is manifest in the We Yones assertion that Dr. Alpha Wurie had acquired his Ramsy Drive estate at Regent from the spoils of office as minister. This of course is totally false as Dr. Wurie had in fact invited his colleagues, relations and friends to that very house when he was appointed minister in 1996. In fact a number of functionaries in the current APC government will attest to that since they were themselves invited guests to the celebrations which were by no means mean.

This certainly confirms that Dr. Wurie was not any average Sierra Leonean but his achievements in his private endeavours had already made it possible for him to afford what is above average in the Sierra Leone context.

If Wurie was in 1996 average, then what Sierra Leonean could have been classified above average? Under age 30, he had attained his doctorate degree, opened a modern privately run laboratory, which at the time was the best in the country; and could afford to drive Mazda RX7 sports car.

In closing, let me give the We Yone editorial team a piece of advice: that if their newspaper is to be regarded as credible, they need to do more research to verify the authenticity of the claims and allegations.

A word for the wise is sufficient.
