NGO to Drag Radio Handicap to Court in Sierra Leone

A local Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Help a Needy Child International (HANCI) has divulged to pressmen plans to institute legal action against the management of FM 96.2, Voice of the Handicapped radio station. This disclosure was made in a press briefing summoned at the organizations Pademba Road Head Office in Freetown.

HANCIs Operations Director, Mr. Emmanuel K. Kargbo accused the station management of airing programmes maligning his organizations reputation, since Monday 24th November 2008. "The contents of the programme include accusing my organization of taking children from their parents in Makeni and its environs without the due consent between 1996 and 1998 (12 years ago)," he pointed out, adding that the radio is also alleging that the affected parents are appealing to the government to come to their aid to salvage the situation.

The Operations Director in no uncertain terms described the claims as baseless, false, malicious, and a deliberate ploy to give a confusing picture of what exactly transpired at the time in question.

He said the alleged adoptions were done by a breakaway NGO known as Cherith International with offices at Calaba Town in the east end of Freetown. He however, said that HANCI briefly cooperated with adoption organizations operating under Cherith from 1996 to 1998 after which the programme continued without HANCIs involvement. The NGO said one Henry Abu and his staff singularly continued and concluded the adoption programme.

Mr. Kargbo further stated that records at Interpol and Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Childrens Affairs can attest that the parents are well aware of the adoption process.

"The Ministry of Social Welfare had assured affected parents of yearly status reports on the welfare of their children residing in the USA", he said. He lamented over he fact that that F.M 96.2 made no efforts or attempt to cross check the information provided by the parents.

As at time of going to press, all efforts to contact the management of the radio station proved abortive, but the Awareness Times team stands willing to publish the other side of the story at any time it is available.
