Sigodi Marah Martin (Pty) Ltd is a Development and Engineering Consultants company founded in September 1996. The companys mission is to provide integrated and multi-disciplinary solutions to engineering and development challenges. It is committed to approaches that support sustainable community development and provide the highest quality results for its clients. Sigodi Marah Martin (SMM) strongly believes in developing the skills and commitment of its staff to provide excellent services.

SMM aim to provide services which maximize the benefits to its clients ; provide integrated and sustainable solutions to development; and support community participation where appropriate.

The company believes in and practice empowerment in terms of rectifying the imbalances of the past in terms of staff selection, and also empowering the staff to grow into their jobs. SMM gives staff the maximum responsibility commensurate with their qualifications and experience, and encourage professional development.

With it country head office at 145 Circular Road in Freetown, the company offers services in the fields of civil engineering, project managemen, town planning and architecture.

Town and Regional planning

SMM handles all aspects of design and construction management of roads, storm water, and water reticulation and sewer reticulation developments. It manages multi-multi disciplinary and multi-firm projects in housing, urban development and transport planning. SMM is experienced in the development of Integrated Development Plans, township layouts and the preparation of urban development frameworks. It also have designed housing projects, community centres, small business centres, shopping centres, tourist facilities, schools and private residences.

Management Support

SMM is specialised in policy and project planning support to public sector institutions on business planning processes, strategic policy and communications support and the design and roll out of municipal support programmes. The company provides services to all spheres of government ; municipal, provincial and national. It can provide management capacity on Build Operate Train and Transfer (BOTT) projects.

Policy, Research, Evaluation and Training
SMM offered services in studies and policy analysis in the field of housing, environment, energy, water supply and sanitation, local government, decentralisation, finance, HIV/AIDS, and training. The company have a range of experience in training and community facilitation. Clients have included local government, community groups and visitors from other countries on study tours. It offers long and short term research studies and documentation of lessons learned from projects and allied work. It also undertakes evaluations of development projects and programmes for USAID, the European Union, UNDP and others. All of SMM staff members are experienced in the development sector. The company have particular skills, expertise and in-dept knowledge of the following sectors :

Transport : Design of all categories of roads including freeway rehabilitation
Housing : Lowcost housing policy issues and the design of housing development
Water Supply and Sanitation: Policy, implementation, regulatory, institutional development and reform issues.
Local planning
: Local development planning processes
Local government capacity building : Service provision, financial and capacity planning
Public participation and community mobilization : Facilitated engagement
Construction : Labour intensive designs and methods

SMM is committed to contributing to the upliftment and advancement of all peoples in Sierra Leone and in other countries where it works. Through SMM offices in Gauteng, Nelspruit, East London and Umtata SMM has established a reputation based on providing maximum benefit to previously marginalised locally based clients and joint venture partners and empowering the communities in which it conduct its business.

About The Managing Director

Managing Director of the Sigodi Marah Martin (Pty) Ltd, Mr. Lansana Marah is a registered professional engineer specialised in the development of urban and rural infrastructure, housing development finance, and long-term project management. He has been the Managing Director of Sigodi Marah Martin since its inception, and has a wealth of project management expertise developed from a wide variety of work including infrastructure projects, management support projects, research projects, training and community participation and project evaluation.

Over the past fifteen years he has held positions as a Regional Manager in support of urban and rural infrastructure provision (Rural Advice Centre) and various community development projects ; a project engineer ; Deputy City Engineer (Mmabatho City Council) ; and Technical Manager. He also held the positions of Area Engineer/ Hydrologist and Senior Water Engineer in the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Development, Zimbabwe. Mr Marah has significant experience in the development sector and in particular in the water services sector in South Africa where he has held special advisory positions to the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and has been involved in donor programmes and programme evaluations. For several years he managed all poverty alleviation projects in the northern parts of Eastern Cape Province for the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. He also provided strategic guidance on local authority support projects funded by USAID and led USAID and SA government sponsored programmes to provide electricity, water, housing and other infrastructure related services in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces in South Africa. Mr Marah is the Chief Executive Officer for the Libuyile Community Development Trust, which provides grant and soft loan funding, management and technical support services to community based organisations. Prior to the formation of SMM, Mr Marah was involved in the USAID funded Community and Urban Services Support Project (CUSSP) as a Technical Manager and Regional Advisor (Director), providing technical advice and training in all aspects of the housing development process.
