Police Recapture Two Hardcore Criminals

In a police press briefing held some two weeks ago, in which the assistant inspector general of police in charge of professional standards SIS Koroma disclosed that about thirteen (13) hard core criminals have been let loose to the public. Some he alleged were let loose by the judiciary and some he said escaped from the court rooms. After a through search for these escapees, the SLP have recently been able to successfully recapture two of them considered to be one of the wanted men. This was disclosed by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of crime services, Francis Munu in UN Radio Tea Break programme early this week. The duo is Hassan Conteh and Oloh Macauley who will appear in court initially for escaping from custody before their files would be traced for the first offence.

Importers Strike

Reports monitored from local tabloids have intimated that business activities in Freetown on Monday 1st December 2008 temporarily came to a standstill with the refusal of traders open their business doors to customers in protest over high taxes levied by the National Revenue Authority (NRA). Reports say about two hundred importers and traders past Saturday held an emergency meeting at which various issues ranging from the frequent disappearance of goods at the Sierra Leone Ports Authority to the High custom charges were deliberated. They reportedly highlighted that they are paying forty million leones and twenty million leones respectively as charges for any forty and twenty feet container, a payment the importers consider as too much considering the harsh economic situation in the country.

Further Reduction in Fuel Price

Oil Marketers on Monday 1st December 2008 made further adjustment in the pump price in fuel downwards by Le. 1,500, after the 5% trigger mechanism in the formula necessitated the reduction. The new pump price for petrol, diesel and kerosene is now Le.12, 500, while fuel oil is reduced by Le. 1,397. 85, to the new price of Le 5, 743.59 per gallon from the former price of Le. 7, 141. 44. Managing Director of the National Petroleum Company, Mohamed Babatunde Cole explained that changes have taken place in the international market since the last price decrease on 27th October 2008.

Female Journalists Threaten To Withdraw From SLAJ

Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) have on Monday 1st December 2008 threatened to withdraw their participation in the activities of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) if the latters election commission insists on recounting the November 29 votes for the National Organizing Secretary that were cast in the Southern Province. According to a press release issued by WIMSAL, the election that saw their member, Hawa Georgette Tucker duly declared winner for the said position, was conducted in a transparent manner. However, the SLAJ Chief Electoral Commissioner in a press release issued on the same day asserted that a recount of the ballots will be held in the spirit of transparency.

`Kenema Mayor Questions APCs Sincerity

Mayor of the Kenema City Council, Chief Brima Kargbo is said to have questioned the sincerity of the peace talks being championed by the ruling All Peoples Congress to strengthen peace among political parties in the district. He stated that the government has failed to uphold certain principles that promote unity. He is reported as saying that certain mechanisms need to be instituted by the ruling APC to demonstrate their total commitment to peace and stability in the country. He said the APC has not done much in bridging the regional, tribal and political divide created by the era of violent campaigns before, during and after the 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Fuel Scarcity in Kambia District

It is reported that fuel dealers in he Kambia District are hiding fuel to create artificial scarcity. Reports allege that these private dealers want to sell fuel at a very high price in the district. Meanwhile, the police are reported to be putting modalities in place to do a house-to-house check and to stop dealers from smuggling fuel to neighboring Guinea.

Larceny Lands Two In Court

Reports have it that one Joseph Kamara and Mohamed Massaquoi were past Friday arraigned before Magistrate Bankole Shyllon of the Freetown Magistrate Court No 3 on two count charges of larceny and conspiracy. The particulars of offence state that the two accused persons conspired to commit felony at the ICR Compound in Freetown. Both accused pleaded not guilty of the charges brought against them. Bail was granted in the sums of two million leones each and the matter adjourned to 9th December 2008.
