Cocaine Case Goes to High Court in Sierra Leone

Lawyers for suspects currently being tried at the Magistrate Court in connection with the plane load of cocaine that landed into Sierra Leone on July 13th 2008, have informed this medium yesterday December 4th 2008, that the matter will be leapfrogged into the High Court this morning via a Section 136 Application that is expected to be heard by Justice Browne Marke. However, some of the lawyers have also informed that they might not show up in Court this morning to defend their clients as the clients had not properly briefed them despite their persistent requests for them to be well briefed.

Explaining what his boss meant, a paralegal clerk told this medium that despite all the "bad name" that lawyers were getting for their representation of cocaine suspects, the suspects had not paid the amount demanded by the lawyers; which delay, in lawyers circles, is euphemistically dubbed as "not properly briefed."

Meanwhile, Law Office sources have intimated that not all suspects will be charged to the High Court. Those charged with minor offences such as ferrying fugitives on a boat, are expected to have all their own charges dropped against them. Also of note is that despite widespread speculations, the suspended Minister of Transport & Aviation, Hon. Kemoh Sesay will not be amongst those who will be charged to court.

Sources also intimate that the suspects might get charged under the old anti-drugs laws as the retroactive nature of the new laws will be easily and successfully challenged at the Courts.
