In Sierra Leone, Fishermen Give Lumley/Aberdeen Beaches a Facelift in Sierra Leone

Fishermen around Lumley and Aberdeen in the western area have decided to complement the efforts of government in giving a facelift to the beaches. Previously, with decline in tourist activities indecent residents had resorted to indulging in open defecation on the banks of the sea, in addition to making the areas permanent dust bins.

To curtail this sad development, a group of fishermen and mongers on Friday 5th December 2008 who have organized themselves into an association called One Pole Fishing Association decided to join hands in launching an operation code named Operation clean the beach.

Speaking to this reporter, the associations chairman, Mr. Mohamed Bangura stated that the rate at which sewages are deposited in the beach has become alarming. "It was as a result of this ugly development that we decided to launch this operation so as to do thorough cleaning of the beach prior to the holidays," he pointed out. He stated that some of the materials discovered during the cleaning exercise include used needles, syringes, plastics and tin cups among others. He said these materials are believed to be coming from hospitals situated along the sea side, adding that it is really a threat to the beauty of our beaches and the fishing practice. "Whenever we go fishing and throw our nets at sea, we are always faced with coming into contact with more waste materials other than the fishes intended," he disclosed

A boat owner, Mr. Alpha Turay expressed fear that if this situation of littering the sea is not brought to a halt, there will be a shortage in the existence of big and nutritious fishes in our waters, as these species do not dwell on dirty water full of plastics and rubbers. He therefore used the forum as an opportunity to call on the government to immediately intervene in and salvage the occurrence.
