Sierra Leoneans Harassed and Detained in Germany

Over three thousand Sierra Leoneans are currently languishing in Germany gaols awaiting deportation, local tabloids have alleged. Reports say the Sierra Leoneans were forcefully raided in their homes and whisked into detention facilities where they were allegedly brutalized. It could be recalled that a lot of Sierra Leoneans were forced to flee their home land to foreign countries during the war where many still remain. According to reports, the said detainees are reportedly calling on the Government of Sierra Leone to come to their aid by using diplomatic means to regularize their status there.

$10M for Public Finance Management Reforms

Head of the European Commission delegation to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Hans Alden has reportedly disclosed that his commission is scaling its support to the public finance management reforms in the country. He said the European Union (EU) has already committed US$10 million to a joint funding of the reform programme. He stated that the Government of Sierra Leone is currently finalizing a comprehensive Integrated Public Finance Management Reform. The reform programme is for four years, covering and addressing weaknesses in key public finance management functions.

Resident Minister Wants Sex Education in Schools

Residents Minister for the Eastern Region, William Juana Smith has reportedly called for the introduction of sex education in schools. The minister is reported as saying that with sex education in schools, the cases of unprotected sex which are usually associated with HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancies will be reduced. He said school going children need to be well informed and guided on sex issues so as to minimize the risk of childrens involvement into unprotected sex and other risky behaviors. He pointed out that the young ones should be educated on HIV/AIDS in order for them to know how to take care of themselves and their sex partners.

President Koroma Demands More Police Recruitment

President Ernest Bai Koroma is said to have instructed the Inspector General of Police, Brima Acha Kamara to recruit about 1,000 police personnel more in order to boost the countrys security. This instruction from the President has reportedly been confirmed by the IG. Acha Kamara is said to have disclosed that President Koroma has vowed to capacitate the police force. He is reported as saying that the recruitment of the new personnel would provide adequate security for the citizenry across the country.

59 Workers Sacked At Sierratel

Sierratel as at Friday 5th December 2008 is said to have taken the decision to render fifty nine (59) workers redundant with immediate effect. According to reports, an official press release signed by the companys management states that the recent change in the method of operation and administration of the business of the company has resulted in the need for a reduction of the workforce requirements. The workers affected include six technicians, one audit clerk, one auto electrician, seven carpenters, four computer operators and ten drivers among others.

Police Destroys 186 Diamba Farms

Assistant Inspector General of Police, Richard Moigbeh is said to have revealed that police have so far destroyed 186 India Hemp (diamba) farms within the forest reserves of the western area. AIG Moigbeh said since the Military Aid to Civil Power (MACP) was initiated by President Koroma on November 12 this year, the joint force had arrested several suspects and discovered several diamba farms within the forest reserves.

ACC Extends Asset Declaration Deadline

It has been reported that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has extended the deadline for assets declaration from 30th November 2008 to 30th January 2009. Reports say this declaration is in accordance with section 119(4) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2008 and that copies of the asset declaration are available at 3 Gloucester Street in Freetown. Reports further state that the ACC has already received several completed forms from many state functionaries including President Koroma. It is an obligation that all public officers should declare their assets.

Kenema Get New TB Lab

Reports monitored from local tabloids have revealed that the German Leprosy Relief Association (GLRA) has spread it tentacles to the Nongowa Chiefdom in the Kenema District. GLRA has reportedly made available a TB Lab at Largo Community Health Centre. GLRA Programme Manager, Dr. Martin Anthony Williams is said to have intimated that the action was taken in collaboration with the Health and Sanitation Ministry to control leprosy.
