Research Clinician

(Pneumococcal Surveillance Project)

The MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Councils largest establishment conducting medical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in low-income countries by excellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes. The Units Bacterial Diseases Programme is conducting disease surveillance for pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia as part of a programme to evaluate the introduction of pneumonia conjugate vaccine into the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI).

We seek a Research Clinician for the Pneumococcal Surveillance Project (PSP). The post-holder will be based at Basse, in the Upper River Region. He/she will be responsible for assessment, investigation, management and documentation of patients referred to the project.

We seek a Research Clinician with:

MD, MB BS, or equivalent medical qualification
FWACP Part 1 or equivalent
Minimum of two to three years post-graduate experience
Good record keeping skills
Good clinical procedure skills
Excellent written and spoken English
Excellent communication skills
Experience of supervising staff
Computer literacy in Windows, Word, Excel, Statistical Software
The ability to deal sensitively with patients, especially children and their mothers
Excellent organisational and management skills
The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team including Scientists, public sector and Government staff
Willingness to work flexible hours and be on the on-call rota
Willingness to live in a rural area with limited facilities

Although not essential, FWACP and/or research experience would be an advantage.

The minimum total salary package for the post will be 481,485 Dalasis per annum. If you have your full FWACP the minimum total salary package will be 577,535 Dalasis per annum. For displaced staff the package will include displacement allowances, rent-free furnished accommodation, flights and shipment of personal effects.
