In Sierra Leone, President Ernest Koroma Blasts Judiciary, Police & Lands

President Ernest Bai Koroma yesterday December 17th 2008, blasted the Judiciary, the Sierra Leone Police, the Educational School System and the Ministry of Lands as "weak, lacking some level of professionalism and needing improvement on integrity."

President Koroma: Blast

President Koroma noted that officials at the Ministry of Lands are guilty of causing problems through double and/or multiple sale of the same land (a reason for which Government has placed a moratorium on all land transactions in the western area), and that the judiciary has been sending the wrong message to the public that justice can only be got by the rich and powerful. He also said the police need to be community-friendly in their response to crises.

The New Lady Chief Justice: Has Inherited Myriad of Problems

The President was speaking whilst receiving the Report by the Commission that was set up to investigate the students-police riots in eastern Freetown that occurred just over a year ago.

The Commission was particularly scathing of the fact that there was a delay in the execution of justice by the Judiciary as there has been a court case on the land in question since 1999 and no verdict has been delivered to date.

Although there was widespread approval of the newly sworn in first female Chief Justice, Hon. Umu Hawa Tejan Jalloh, there has been no underestimation of the task that lies ahead for her as she is known to have inherited a myriad of problems in a Judicial system that is only now slowly beginning to experience some form of confidence in its activities by members of the public.

Awareness Times will meanwhile be investigating who is the Judge in the matter cited at State House yesterday which has most unfortunately dragged on since 1999 without a verdict being rendered. As such a so-far-inexplicable ten-years delay is a sure sign of probable injustice, we will be formally requesting from the Office of the Master & Registrar for a copy of the recordings of that particular proceedings so we can evaluate the proceedings; albeit we will not comment on them.

Meanwhile, the State House Press Release is reproduced verbatim below:
