Education Minister Refuses to Refund College Fees

Students who were offered government grant-in-aid attending various tertiary institutions are presently unhappy with the current Minister of Education for allegedly refusing to make refunds of payment to the various colleges on their behalf. The student who got the grants in the 2006/07 academic year are said to be denied payment by the minister on grounds that it was not during the current regime the grants were offered. However, they report that certain students offered the same period have been selected based on political sentiments.

PMDC Gave Aspirant Le. 52m to Campaign for APC

Leader of Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) is reported to have recently made a scathing revelation in Pujehun, Southern Sierra Leone as how he gave the sum of Le. 52m to the aspirant for Constituency 87, Moijeh Kaikai to campaign for APC in last years election run-off. The revelation came in the wake of Kaikai recent defection to the APC. Margai now alleges that Kaikai has betrayed the party by defecting after having a field day with campaign money. Kaikai on his part also reportedly alleged in the same meeting that APC gave Le.60m to the PMDC leader for similar purpose which he too diverted. There is an ongoing tussle in the PMDC with regards cohesion. Many defects have been made to either ruling APC or opposition SLPP in disfavour of Charles Margais behaviour

National ID Cards Issuance to Resume

Thomas De La Rue has been reportedly contracted by government to supply and install all equipment to the National Registration Secretariat for the production of National ID Cards. The machine once in operation is reported to produce 1400 ID Cards daily per average. This is a welcome development given the absence of issuance of ID cards for the past couple of years. This initiative is said to be that of the current Internal Affairs Minister, Ambassador Dauda Kamara. Workers at the Secretariat who had remained redundant for years are now said to be undergoing intensive training to make them familiar with the new process.

More Loan Money for Bumbuna Project

A US$15m loan from the African Development Bank has reportedly been ratified by Parliament for the ongoing Bumbuna Project. The loan money, if correctly expended is sure to complete the more than 30-year-old hydro electric project. It will reportedly be used to finance civil works and audit serves. Payment period for the said loan will span for 40 years period. Opposition however, fears that the loan money will be diverted to other issues. But they also hope that with vigorous monitoring, the project will surely come to fruition next year.

Health workers Union Elects New Executive

The Sierra Leone Health Workers Union past weekend elected another executive to man the affairs of the union for another five years. The election took place during the fourth National Delegates Conference of the union. The convention itself was organized with objective to hold frank discussions on various issues affecting the union, including gains and shortfalls of the previous administration, economic and social wellbeing of members and amendment to the unions constitution.

PPRC Rejects SLPP Financial Report

The Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) early this week reportedly rejected the financial report submitted by opposition SLPP for the last local council elections. Reason for the rejection was given for the alleged absence of the signatory of the partys secretary general on the report forms. The financial reports were to be submitted to the commission since September but none of the four parties that contested the local council elections met the dead line. Also, all political parties, including ruling APC failed to give account of all the candidates supported to which the commission has taken great exception.
