Both the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) have assured the public that there is no cause for fear as far as security is concerned. The two security forces said they are on top of situation as far as manning the security of the state is concerned as reportedly evidenced in the overall calmness in the entire country, notwithstanding isolated incidences of night armed robberies.

This joint assurance was made by both the Police Media Unit Boss, Inspector Ibrahim Samura and Colonel John Milton in Charge of Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence at yesterdays usual weekly government press briefing at the Conference Room of the Information and Communication Ministry, Youyi Building in Freetown.

In his statement, Colonel John Milton described the countrys security situation as calm and quiet. He said they have conducted a number of operations among which are Operation Restore Hope and Operation Marconi. He explained that Operation Restore Hope was designed to protect water catchments and to combat the massive deforestation taking place. Operation Marconi on the other hand he said is a joint border patrol involving Sierra Leone and Guinea.

"The RSLAF is presently partaking in international peace keeping operations in countries like Sudan and Nepal," he disclosed, adding that it is their determination and aspiration to send a company strength of peace keeping troops to war torn Dafur region of Sudan.

For his part, Inspector Ibrahim Samura said the police have already put modalities in place to oversee state security, especially during and after the festive season. He assured that police personnel would be deployed throughout the country, adding that these personnel would be working on a 24-hour basis throughout the festivities. "The police are well prepared to confront any eventuality and traffic jam during the festivities," he concluded.
