War against Fake Drug DealersTop  at Gear

Reports monitored from local tabloids have intimated that a total of 165 fake drug dealers in the Western Area alone have been called to book. Chairman of the Pharmacy Board Sierra Leone, Mr. Bassie S.R Turay is reported as saying that the board has taken tough disciplinary actions against licensed drug entrepreneurs who were found wanting for selling illegally imported drugs and fake and substandard medicines in the country. He said some of these entrepreneurs have their license revoked with other fined huge sums of money.

UNFPA Calls for Gender Sensitivity

The National Programme Officer for UNFPA, Isatu Kajue is reported as saying that any country that is not sensitive to gender issues is bound to fail. She reportedly said that her organization plays a crucial role in the area of gender equity and reproductive health care issues. She added that they collaborate with gender advocates and the media to popularize the gender bills. She disclosed that they are at present looking at the various gender legislations in the country, while collaborating with other agencies and line ministries to raise awareness on gender issues.

Windfall for PPRC

Reports have it that the International Foundation for Election System (IFES) has recently donated Le.7, 405, 000 worth of office equipment to the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) at their Tower Hill Office in Freetown. IFES reportedly assisted the PPRC by providing office accommodation and paying salaries for the regional and other contractual staff and the implementation of its programme activities during 2007/2008 elections.

WAANSA Meets With Civil Society

West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA) is said to have ended a two-day regional civil society forum at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown. The objective of the forum was to review civil societys nature and role in combating the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the sub-region. The meeting reportedly brought together representatives of civil society national networks and coalitions across West Africa, journalists, government officials experts on small arms control and peace building and development partners among others.

Traders Angry with Council

Petty Traders within the municipality of Freetown have reportedly expressed their dissatisfaction over what they described as the unilateral decision of Freetown City Council (FCC) to have pronounced increment of 150% of market dues by January 2009 from Le. 200 to Le. 500 without consulting stakeholders. The traders are said to have described such action as a deliberate attempt to make business very difficult for them. They view the one-hundred and fifty percent increment in market dues as very unreasonable and could not be justified in any way.

Development Fund for NATCOM

In collaboration with Global System Machines (GSM), the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) has agreed to officially launch the Universal Access Development Fund that would enable GSM operators and service providers to honour their obligations of paying into the fund for the development of the telecommunications industry. Information and Communication Minister, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo is said to have emphasized the need to regulate the telecommunications industry in the country, while assuring that NATCOM would continue to remain an independent entity with full and effective function as regulator in line with international best practices of telecommunications industry.

Fuel Price Still High in Kailahun

Reports say the cost of a gallon of fuel in Kailahun District, Eastern Sierra Leone remain Le.16, 000 (sixteen thousand leones), which is in contrast with the official price of Le.12, 000. It was confirmed that only two fuel dealers in the district were selling fuel at the official government price, at the height of artificial fuel scarcity in that region. Assistant Inspector General of Police East, Al-Sheik Kamara and Head of CID, Samuel Sannie, are reported as saying that they are working frantically to make certain that dealers in fuel sell at the recommended official price in addition to ensuring that fuel is not sol to black-marketers.
