250 Shelters for Liberian Refugees

Reports say that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) have started the construction of 250 shelters with toilets in the South/Eastern part of Sierra Leone. The project is meant for the integration of all Liberian refugees who are in limbo for want of reintegration. It is reported that the UNHCR head of sub delegation in Kenema, Gabriel Bagui has disclosed that all the refugees who are willing for this local integration will be given loan for self reliance in their respective areas. Reports say other NGOs are ready to help these refugees with food and medical facilities

SLG Students Give Ultimatum

It is reported that the students of the Fourah Bay College (FBC) who received the government grant-in-aid for he 2006-2007 academic year are planning a strike action if their refunds are not paid. The administration is presently giving refunds to 2007/08 students only. It is however, reported that students had already signed the 2006/07 voucher before those who are now receiving refunds.

861Civil Servants Relieved of Duty

About 861 civil servants from various ministries have reportedly been suspended and heir names also removed from the payroll. The director general of Human Resource Management Office (HRMO), Ernest Surrur has reportedly confirmed that those affected did not attend the just concluded payroll verification exercise. He said they will give this affected persons one more chance to be verified, adding that no other chance will be given after that. It is reported that over one thousand workers have passed the retirement age and only 300 have received retirement letters. Reports say a medical board is going to be set up to retire workers who are sick, mad or blind.

SIERRATEL to Take Over Soon

SIERRATEL will in the coming weeks overtake all the private telecommunication companies with a reliable, modern and reasonably cheap mobile and land CDMA telephone services in Sierra Leone. Reports have disclosed that a test CDMA transmission has actively started. Several cell sites have reportedly been established, with equipment and CDMA land and mobile phones already received from the Chinese government.

African Minerals to Provide Electricity

It is reported that African Minerals will provide 500 megawatts plant for the government. Resident of the companys operation areas will benefit from this electricity. Reports say the company has started the renovation of its quarters at Pepel and other areas. It is reportedly disclosed that the company is going to reserve for youths employment and other facilities in Sierra Leone.

Zain Captures Ghana

It is reported that the highest and best network, 3.5G network on the continent outside South Africa was launched by Zain in Ghana yesterday. The network has so many facilities including video calls and use rich multimedia continent including sending video clips, music and pictures at the touch of a button. Reports say Ghana has now joined a borderless mobile service, one network that operates within 17 countries. Reports have also disclosed that apart from reducing costs for its customers as usual in other countries, the company will also help Ghana in terms of development.

SLPP Pujehun District Councilor Dies

Reports monitored from local tabloids say, Councilor Alieu Feika of Ward 323 of Bambara Chiefdom, Pujehun District has died. The cause of his death is yet unknown as reports revealed that he died just after attending a recent council meeting in Pujehun. The remains of the councilor will be laid to rest in his home town at Sokobana Chiefdom. It is reported that a bye-election would likely be conducted to replace this vacuum.

APC Youth Leader Arrested in Bo

Katisco Sesay is alleged to have been arrested on the order of President Koroma on allegation of masterminding chaos in that city in the name of party politics. According to Victor Bockarie Foh, the APC secretary General, the youth leader had created so many problems in Bo city and was fished out on the presidents order. Reports say Sesay has been provoking tribal sentiments and other havocs including embezzlement of APC funds. No information has been received from him on this allegation.
