Following the untimely death of a student of the Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone, the Ernest Bai Koroma led All Peoples Congress (APC) government on Wednesday 24th December 2008 issued a press release, imposing a total ban on all social clubs in all educational institutions across the country. The release stated that social clubs in tertiary institutions have become a platform for cultism and unorthodox practices "which are having a negative influence on youths in our society."

The student in question met his demise in a location outside the college campus, after reportedly undergoing initiation rites to become a member of two of the social clubs in the college.

A verbatim of the Press Release from the Office of the President is produced in the ensuing.

Press Release

It has come to the attention of Government that a student of Fourah Bay College met his untimely death after undergoing initiation rites to become a member of two of the social clubs in the college. The incident occurred in a location outside the FBC campus. The sad demise of this young man is a loss not only to his family but to the nation at large. Government expresses heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family for this irreparable loss.

Government views with grave concern that social clubs in tertiary institutions have become a platform for cultism and unorthodox practices which are having a negative influence on youths in our society. This breach of normal behaviour is totally unacceptable.

With immediate effect, Government therefore imposes a total ban on all social clubs in all educational institutions in the country.

Government wishes to make it abundantly clear that any violation of this ban will meet with the full penalty of the law and offenders will be prosecuted. You have been warned.
