FCC to Construct Central Market
Reports say plans are afoot by the Freetown City Council (FCC) to construct a central market that will accommodate all traders doing business in the western area. Reports say the limited market space within the Freetown municipality cannot at present accommodate the fast growing business population thus the urgent need for the construction of a multi purpose market facility. FCC's Public Relations Officer, Cyril Mattia is reported as saying that this was the reason behind the increment of market dues.
National Farmers Commence Seminar
Reports have it that the National Farmers Association of Sierra Leone is presently holding a week long seminar geared towards building the capacity of its members and to create awareness on the WTO, EPA and issues affecting farmers as a whole. The workshop is attracting farmers from the sub region to deliberate on issues pertinent to farmers not only in Sierra Lone but the West Africa region as a whole. The objective of the workshop is for GOPA to create more awareness in farmers to know the WTO.
Births and Deaths Annual Report Published
Reports monitored from local tabloids stated that the Births and Deaths Division of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has presented its annual report on births and deaths registered in Sierra Leone from January 1st to 25th December 2008. According to reports, the provincial figures country wide this year supplied by all registration offices shows that a total of 114, 740 live births were recorded of which 56,863 were males and 57,877 were females. The report indicates that 14,045 deaths of all ages of which 7,061 were males and 6,984 females.
Students Stance on Murdered Colleague
The Students' Union Executive of Fourah Bay College has reportedly pledged its fullest support and cooperation to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police in ensuring that the cause of the death of Mohamed Juana, who was allegedly murdered in a club initiation rite, are unraveled and the culprits brought to book. The union takes great exception to any club activity that is synonymous to cruelty, ill-treatment of persons and degradation of humanity. The union is however calling on the government to revisit the decision of banning social clubs but to find an amicable solution to the impasse.
42 Year Raped to Death
Reports say a 42 year old woman called Kumba Turay has been raped to death in the Northern headquarter town of Makeni. Surgeon Specialist, Dr. Ibrahim Bundu has reportedly revealed that the woman died as a result of cardiac respiratory failure and strangulation and forceful penetration into her virgina. The hospital has handed over the remains to the family for burial but police are presently investigating the matter.
Parliament to Approve Salone Ambassador to Russia
Local tabloids have intimated that the newly appointed Sierra Leonean Ambassador to Russia, Dr. Sallieu Mohamed Turay will soon face parliament for approval. According to reports, Eastern European countries were allegedly neglected by the former government with regards diplomatic ties. Reports say Sierra Leone has gained so much from Russia in terms of academic pursuits.
Comium Forces Commercial Manager to Resign
Comium mobile company is said to have coerced its commercial manager, Lawrence Spencer Coker to resign amidst controversies in the aftermath of a December 8 gig that hosted popular female duo, Brick and Lace at the National Stadium in Freetown. The manager's exit from the company came in the wake of allegations that he squandered huge amount of money leaving the company with looses estimated at above US$60,000.
