The National Power Authority (NPA), Wednesday 14th January 2009, intensified moves aimed at cracking down on rampant illegal electricity connections around the Hotel 5/10 (Quarry) environs in the east end of Freetown.

The confiscated metres

These moves have by all indications been successful, as 19 culprits are now in the hands of the police, helping them in their investigations into the matter.

The exercise is in line with the determination of the Energy and Power Minister, Haja Afsatu Kabbah to accomplish her sacred and challenging mission to provide sustainable electricity supply to all and sundry.

A similar exercise was also conducted in the Goderich area in the far west of town, where reports indicate that NPA officials were able to unearth serious cases of illegal connections and meter interferences. Cases of illegal reconnections are also said to have been discovered at Goderich.

Some of those found wanting have since been ordered to report to the Technical Audit Department at Electricity House, Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown, failing which, they will have to face the full penalty of the law.

Scores of meters, electric cables and other essential devices discovered during the hectic exercise, were confiscated and taken over to the Technical Audit Department for thorough examination.

It could be recalled that since the change of Management at NPA, following the coming into power by the All People’s Congress (APC) government headed by His Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, things have changed significantly.

Electricity which used to be a scarce commodity, has today become available in most parts across the municipality and with the Bumbuna project nearing completion, it is expected that electricity shortage will soon be a thing of the past.

It is expected that by April this year, the much awaited Bumbuna Hydro-Electric project will finally become a reality, with much thanks to the shrewd and determined leadership of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and his able Minister of Energy and Power Haja Afsatu Kabbah and her hard working and dedicated team at NPA.

Although the Bumbuna project is progressing satisfactorily, the activities of criminals and other locals, seem to be creating some hiccups here and there.

The theft of a number of high tension electric cables and pylons, coupled with the rampant illegal extraction of electricity supply, are issues the Authority is currently poised to put behind it.

In our next issue, we shall look more closely at the progress made so far with regards electricity supply and issues affecting Bumbuna’s progress and other related issues.
