The former Vice President of Sierra Leone, the ever-popular Solomon Ekuma Berewa (aka Solo-B), yesterday Wednesday January 21st 2009, was up at Juba Hill where he joined scores of friends and family of his former boss ex-President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah at the 40th Day Funeral Ceremony Rites of the Late son of the former President, Junior Kabbah. According to eye witnesses, the former President and his former Vice President chatted amicably with each other. Many of those present told this writer that the friendly banter served as a symbol of the ongoing dissolution of various intra-party factions that had threatened the peaceful co-existence of the partys membership.

In the last fortnight, prudent steps have been taken by certain stakeholders in the country which have seen SLPP members slowly but surely putting their differences aside and coalescing back together. Many citizens are hopeful that the SLPP will soon take its rightful position as the Legitimate Opposition Party that will keep the ruling APC led Government on its toes.

It is not only the SLPP supporters who are elated at the peace showing forth in their party. According to a member of the ruling APC party, who preferred not to be named but who was also present at the 40th Day Ceremony yesterday, the lack of leadership of the SLPP and the partys infighting had handicapped the SLPP to the extent that the SLPP had not been able to effectively play their democratic role of criticizing the ruling party. As a result, the APC member opined, the APC had been de-railed as it was not being prodded to govern better.

Meanwhile, the SLPP itself has been reorganizing itself around the country in a bid to strengthen the partys position for the next General Elections slated to be held in 2012. Several districts are either preparing to hold mini conventions or have duly elected their various chairpersons.

On Tuesday January 20th 2009, Mr. A.B. Sheriff, a one time Honourable Member of Parliament, has become the duly elected Chairman of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) in the Koinadugu district. Mr. Sheriff was unanimously elected to the position during the districts mini convention organised to elect new party officials in the district. According to our correspondents, the entire event passed by peacefully. Meanwhile, the SLPPs mini-Convention for Bombali District will be held tomorrow. It is also expected to be very peaceful.

The District mini conventions are the prelude to the Grand Convention slated for March this year. Numerous aspirants for various national positions are jostling to market themselves to the winning district candidates who will be the ones casting ballots to elect the next National Executive of the SLPP.

Here in Freetown, a wave of euphoria has greeted the news that popular socialite and international businessman and youth activist, Mr. Lansana Fadika is aspiring for the position of Western Area Regional Chairman of the SLPP. Awareness Times will soon publish an exclusive interview with Lansana Fadika about his aspirations and dreams for taking the opposition SLPP back to a position of ruling party
