The Hon. Leonard Balogun Koroma is one of the most experienced public servants in the present government of President Ernest Bai Koroma. A popular man and socialite, Mr. Balogun Koroma, who is fondly known as "LOGUS " has been in public service since he graduated from Fourah Bay College, the University of Sierra Leone over 30 years ago. He has held many important positions in the Sierra Leone Civil Service and two different governments. His meritorious public service as a public functionary makes him one of the assets of the present government. Mr. Koroma is one of the ministers who deserve the distinction of being called a veteran public servant and politician.

Mr. Leonard Balogun Koroma was a member of the delegation of Vice-President Alhaji Abubakarr Sam Sumana who were invited to the United States recently by the Commissioner of Miami Dade County, Mr. Dorrin Rolle, to participate not only in activities commemorating the inauguration of the first African/ American President of the U.S, Mr. Barak Obama but explore business opportunities that could stimulate economic and cultural cooperation between the nation of Sierra Leone and the county of Miami Dade.

As he remained in the United States of America for a few days after the departure of the Hon. Vice President and his delegation following a successful visit, Cocorioko found time to talk to Minister of State, Logus Koroma about his life, his career as an Administrative Officer of the Sierra Leone civil servant, and now, as a politician.

Leonard Balogun Koroma was born in Freetown on 18th May, 1951 to the union of the late Mr. Sondifu Martin Koroma of Kangama, Ngorama Chiefdom, Kono District and Mrs. Hannah Gadd (nee. Wilson) of Freetown. He attended the Tower Hill Municipal Primary School, Bishop Johnson Memorial Secondary School, Yengema Secondary School, St Edwards Secondary School and Fourah Bay College, where he graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts General Degree.

Mr. Koroma started his political career while he was a student at FBC in the 1970s. He was an active participant in student council activities and even contested the students Council presidential elections. He made many valuable friends at FBC and was one of the most likeable students on the campus.

On graduation from College, he joined the Sierra Leone Civil Service in 1976 as Administrative Officer. He was first posted to the Ministry of Finance, Development and Economic Planning for a brief period after which he was appointed Press Officer to the Late President Siaka Stevens at State House, succeeding Mr. David John. As Press Secretary, Mr. Koroma was a close confidant of President Siaka Stevens and traveled with him extensively in Sierra Leone and overseas. As a young Administrative Officer, Mr. Koroma was the youngest to have held that position.

Following his service at State House, Mr. Leonard Balogun Koroma was posted to the provinces where he served as Assistant Secretary, Provincial Secretarys office, Bo, Southern Region; Assistant District Officer, Pujehun District, Southern Region; Assistant District Officer, Moyamba District, Southern Region; Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Labor; Senior Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Power; Senior Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Communications; Senior District Officer, Port Loko District, Northern Province; Senior District Officer, Kono District, Eastern Province; Deputy Secretary ( also Acting Permanent Secretary) Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Forestry; Secretary to the Electoral Commission and Chief Elections Officer.

Following the N.P.R.C. coup in 1992, Mr. Koroma proceeded to the United Kingdom in 1994 where he played a pivotal role in resuscitating the then defunct A.P.C. United Kingdom and Northern Ireland Branch with the help of the present Sierra Leones Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Bockari Kortu Stevens , and the Minister of Defence, Rtd. Major Palor Conteh.

From the United Kingdom, Mr. Koroma proceeded to the United States of America where he played a similar role in resuscitating the A.P.C. Metropolitan Washington Chapter together with Mr. Raymond Kabia, the present Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development and Hon. Alimamy Kargbo, Member of Parliament, amongst others. Minister Logus Koroma also served as President of the A.P.C. Metropolitan Washington Chapter. While occupying that position, Mr. Koroma traveled extensively within the United States, Europe and Sierra Leone on A.P.C. Party matters. Together with the First Lady, Mrs. Sia Nyama Koroma, Mr. Alex Mansaray and others, Mr. Koroma was member of the delegation that traveled to Tilburg in the Netherlands to secure the now A.P.C. RADIO. Mr. Koroma worked together with Mr. Alex Mansaray to set up the APC Chapter in New Jersey , which became one of the most vibrant chapters in the Diaspora.

In 2006, Mr. Logus Koroma decided to return home to play his own part in the 2007 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, which was won by the A.P.C. Party , with His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma as President. On November 20, 2007, Mr. Koroma was appointed Minister of State, Office of the Vice President by His Excellency the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, and he continues to serve in that position, where he enjoys an excellent working relationship with the Hon. Vice President, Alhaji Chief Abubakarr Sam Sumana.

In addition to being a veteran Administrator with vast experience, Mr. Logus Koroma joined the A.P.C. Party in 1969 at the age of 18 years, and has been fiercely loyal to the party ever since. He held several Executive positions in the A.P.C. National Youth League, and was also President of the A.P.C. National Youth League, Fourah Bay College Branch.

Mr. Leonard Balogun Koroma is married with 3 children, enjoys classical music, reading and writing, and is also an ardent church goer.

Asked by Cocorioko what he considered his philosophy of life, Hon. Balogun Koroma replied that he believed in providing honest and devoted service to his nation. He said that he had served Sierra Leone faithfully and conscientiously and he was determined to continue offering his service to the government and the people of Sierra Leone.

The minister conceded that once in a while, detractors of the government and ones own personal antagonists would try to defame public officials and link their names with deeds that were alien to them. He said he however believed that the most important thing to any man is his conscience. "As long as you know that your conscience is clear, you do not have to worry about anything said against you by your detractors. You just keep serving your country and people, knowing that there is a God up there who will continue to bless you for your devoted service to mankind", he concluded.
