The Human Rights Respect Awareness Raising Campaigners (HURRARC), was born in Sierra Leone by a group of young writers, after the gross human rights violations perpetuated by a group of young military officers who had unlawfully overthrown the then democratically elected All Peoples Congress (APC) Government, on April 29th, 1992.

The rebels also arrested 25 government officials and some innocent civilians, whom they executed without proper trials on 28th December 1992.

Another victim, whose killing became another spurring factor and motivation, was Mr. Salami Coker, a mentor and consultant of HURRARC.

On the 29th of December, 1992, a group of young writers called the Patriotic African Youths Advocating for the Truth (P.A.Y.A.T.) gathered together and reasoned that the time had come to curtail human rights violations by collecting statistical data of such abuses during and after the decade long rebel war in the country.

HURRARC intends to create an awareness campaign that would uplift respect for the universal declaration of human rights.

The organization, as a way of moving its objectives forward, appeals to the Government and citizens to cultivate and maintain a sense of fairness in both our national and universal respect for one another, in Sierra Leone, Africa and the whole over.

The Association was collectively undersigned and registered, and came into being on the 5th January, 1993 as the Human Rights Respect Awareness Raising Campaigners (HURRARC). It began in the diamond rich city of Koidu and later extended to Freetown. Plans are underway to establish it in other parts of the country, in a bid to make it have a national character.

HURRARCs mission is to defend and protect human rights and dignity, in order to re-establish world peace that is so much needed today. The organization also promotes democracy, and advocates for maximum respect for the Rule of Law and the global Bill of Rights for all, irrespective of race, creed or the status of any individual and/or leader, state and/or ally. One major activity embarked upon by the organization is arts work, depicting the values of our society and spreading the message of peace and love and oneness.
