After his exemplary debut chairing of the AU General Assembly on Monday 2nd February 2009, President Ernest Bai Koroma was again yesterday 3rd February unanimously approved to chair the first session of the Unions last-day deliberations in Addis Ababa.

The President successfully conducted the session, which lasted for five hours, with primary emphasis on the global financial crisis. After his opening comments, President Koroma asked the AU Commissioner for Economic affairs, Dr. Maxwell Mkwezalamba, to give some introductory remarks, before he gave the floor to host Prime Minister Ato Meles Zenawi for a detailed presentation. Other speakers that the Sierra Leonean leader gave an opportunity to intervene were, among others, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank; Mr. Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA); Mr. Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank; and Lord Mallock Brown, Britains Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth Office.

The session also included discussions on the Strategic Plan for 2009-2012, the Programme Budget for 2009, the Statute of the African Union Commission on International Law (AUCIL), the African Charter on Statistics, appointment of members of the Advisory Board on corruption within the African Union, and the report of the Commission on the review of the Protocol relating to the Pan African Parliament.

After the session and short break, President Koroma later took the podium as one of six presenters of reports to the General Assembly. President Koroma presented his Report on the Implementation of Decision Assembly/AU/Dec.204 (XI) on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council as Chairman of the Committee of Ten.

After that, the General Assembly broke off for lunch. The second session resumed behind closed doors to adopt decisions and declarations. However, it is confirmed that the July summit of the AU will be held in Madagascar this year.
