Women in the Madia Sierra Leone (WIMSAL)
PRESS RELEASE

We wish to express our grave concern over the intimidation and molestation meted out to the Publisher and Proprietress of one of Sierra Leones leading newspapers Awareness Times, Dr. Sylvia O. Blyden.

This incident took place at Siaka Stevens Street in front of Kissy House on Tuesday 27th January 2009 by a group of people on the alleged orders of one Mr. Alfred T. Gbakima.

This was as a result of her Newspapers coverage of an alleged case of assault perpetrated by Mr. Gbakima and others who are now in court.

WIMSAL, as a Female Media Group advocating for the rights of Female Media Practitioners, view this action as an attempt to prevent Dr. Sylvia Blyden from discharging her duties as a Publisher. Also, we consider this act to be against the tenet of Human Rights and democracy.

We want to urge the relevant authorities to speedily investigate the matter, as the life of Dr. Sylvia Blyden is endangered by threatening remarks being constantly made by this group of people.

Signed....
Princess Gibson
