The University of Sierra Leone (USL) in collaboration with the British Council on Friday 6th February 2009 held a one-day workshop on Enhancing submission of research proposal on the Development of Education Partnership in Higher Education (DELPHE), at the British Council, Tower Hill, in Freetown.

The DELPHE project is sponsored by a DFID grant ranging from 15 thousand pounds to 50 thousand pounds, and is intended to be led by higher educational institutions in beneficiary countries.

DELPHE projects are funded in well over 20 countries in the sub Sahara countries and Asia.

According to Elenorah Metzger, the Customer Service Executive at the British Council, DELPHE project proposals must be in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and current development priorities.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, Professor Aiah A. Gbakima, explained how the project works, and implored university officials to think of putting forward a proposal that will be in line with the aims and objectives of the programme, adding that the project is very competitive. He also advised that the submission of the project goes in accordance with the deadline set, so as to be among the first to be considered.

The Director of Business at the British Council, Amos Lansana, advised that the opportunity be made good use of, if only to improve conditions at higher institutions of learning. He said universities in Sierra Leone should be able to compete with other universities in the world as far as the DELPHE project is concerned. The Chairman of the workshop, Dr. R.E Buck, who happens to be the Director of Planning at the USL, elaborated on the aims and objectives of the project, saying it a partnership management that is geared towards enhancing education, health, infrastructure, agriculture and other development initiatives bordering on the MDGs.
