On Friday this week, (13th February 2009), the former President of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah will be presenting a one-hour lecture on the theme Governance in Post-Conflict Sierra Leone at the Northern Provincial town of Makeni in Bombali District. Being held by the Catholic Mission in memory of the late Bishop Azzolini, the lecture falls on the centenary of Azzolinis birth and will be internationally published by the UK-based Professor Dan Okrafor-Smart of the Sierra Leone Academy. This was confirmed to this writer in an exclusive chat with the former President last weekend at his Juba Hill residence.

According to President Kabbah, the late Bishop Azzolini was one of the pioneers in the development of Christianity in the Northern Province and particularly in Makeni. Kabbah said the late Azzolini was "in spirit, devotion and service, a Sierra Leonean, and a symbol of what a Sierra Leonean patriot should be".

Kabbah expressed pride to be asked by the Catholic Mission to deliver the lecture. He revealed that even though he was a devout Muslim, he was schooled by the Catholic Mission and went on to marry a Catholic, the Late Lady Patricia Kabbah. Also as District Commissioner in Makeni in 1959, it was Kabbah who played a leading role in assisting the Catholic Mission to acquire enough land for their religious and educational endeavours.

Meanwhile, those who have read the contents of the lecture itself that will be delivered by Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah have stated that it is an in-depth look at how to best govern a post-conflict Nation and rebuild the pillars of democracy.

"It is clearly going to be a lesson for both contemporary Sierra Leonean Leaders and their successors," a source who has glimpsed the contents opined yesterday in Freetown.

Professor Dan Okrafor-Smart, himself a celebrated publisher of Sierra Leonean books who is currently based in the United Kingdom, has confirmed to Awareness Times in a telephone interview that the one hour lecture on Good Governance that the former President will be delivering up at Makeni will be made available worldwide including to the United States Library of Congress, the British Library, the Publishers Association and numerous Universities around the world.

"I have read a copy of the comprehensive lecture that will be delivered by the former President and it passes all standards for us to publish it. We have arranged for it to be an international publication with ISBN numbers already assigned to it," Okrafor Smart said adding that the publisher of Awareness Times, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden will handle all the local aspects for the publication of the lecture material whilst he would be handling the international aspects.
