In continuation of its sensitization drive, the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a component of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), on Wednesday 4th February 2009 organized a workshop for Judges and Magistrates, at the Chambers of the Chief Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Opening the session, the dynamic Chief Justice, Madam Umu Tejan Jalloh, thanked GST and the resident consultant for organizing the workshop, saying it will go a long way in boosting the justice sector.

She said they in the judiciary are looking forward to GST to replicate such training at regular intervals, so as to enable her personnel to be familiar with the GST process.

In his remarks, the Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) Allieu Sesay described the process as ongoing, noting that they have identified the judiciary as being crucial to the success of GST in Sierra Leone.

He pointed out that they in the NRA especially the GST, are committed to creating an enabling environment for the people of this country to live in.

In his presentation, the Resident Consultant of GST, George Blankson, disclosed that the essence of the workshop was to equip judges and magistrates who are key policy makers and implementers, with the tools they require for the interpretation of the GST implementation policy and identification of areas in which they have a role in ensuring successful implementation of the tax.

The Acting Commissioner General of GST, Alfred Akibo-Betts, said the rationale behind the introduction of GST is to respond to the unacceptably high proportion of the countrys national budget being donor dependent.

He said the overriding objective is to reduce over-dependence on donor funding, especially in respect of recurrent expenditure.

Mr. Akibo-Betts said government is under increasing pressure to mobilize revenue and put in place modalities necessary for supporting private investment and creating the social stability required for orderly development.
