The Chief Nursing Officer, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Matron Mabel Carew, has called on nurses to work ethically, selflessly and sincerely in the discharge of their duties.

Addressing Maternal and Child Health Aides graduands at the MCH-Aides Training Centre in Magburaka, Matron Carew said nurses should be seen as role models in their communities by executing their duties with professionalism.

She described their certificate as a baptismal torch in a new era of commitment, sacrifice and dedication, adding that they should be seen as responsible persons delivering quality and efficient health care services in their various health facilities.

Matron Carew implored the graduands to encourage Traditional Birth Attendants to use the health facility for deliveries by working as a team in the fight against maternal and newborn mortality.

The Manager, EPI and Child Health Programme Dr. Thomos Samba, said the Ministry is currently working on the status of all health care workers with a view to improving their conditions of service, noting that it is one of the factors responsible for the brain drain in the medical and nursing profession.

He encouraged them to be friendly and helpful to their patients, pointing out that a good patient and nursing relationship will yield dividend in the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality. The graduands are nurses from Tonkolili and Kono districts.
