Following allegations and counter allegations that the Sport Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) is focused only on football and not the other sporting disciplines such as boxing, weight lifting and marshal art, the Association has taken the bull by the horn by organizing a never to be forgotten competition in Bo.

On Saturday 9th February 2009, hundreds of people assembled at the Bo Coronation Field to witness a grand Boxing, Weight Lifting and Marshal Art competition organized by the Bo branch of SWASAL.

The competition was graced by several eminent personalities in Bo and other sports lovers including Rodney Michaels, who was the Guest of Honour.

Speaking to Awareness Times, the Secretary General of SWASAL, Alhaji Kombah, explained that they decided to organize the competition to dispel widespread rumours that the Association is only concerned with football and neglecting other sporting disciplines.

While debunking the claims as untrue, he however stated that they are paying much attention to football because the Association was borne out of it.

He added that they organized the competition for the people of Bo and the entire country to know that they are ready to concentrate not only on football, but all other disciplines including boxing, weight lifting and marshal art. He assured that the event will be replicated annually.

Mr. Kombah called on the people of Bo to count on them as they are ready to ensure that they inform, educate and entertain them with latest information bordering on sports.

Delivering a brief address to the audience, the Guest of Honour, Mr. Rodney Michaels, commended SWASAL for the initiative and encouraged them to continue their good work in promoting sport in the country.

He described the competition as an historic event, as it marks the first sporting event organized wholly and solely by journalists.
