There was wild jubilation at the Opposition Party Headquarters yesterday as a special Unity Fan Club was launched so as to help raise funds for the running operations of the partys radio station and their planned newspaper. It was an occasion launched in grand style and saw the former President, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah socializing alongside the likes of former Ambassador Alie Bangura, prolific writer Dr. Sama Puawui Banya, Hon. Bernadette Lahai the SLPP Womens Leader, Dr. Bu-buakei Jabbi, the Partys Lawyer, Agbah Lansana Fadika the aspirant for Western Area Chairmanship, Dixon Rogers, the newly elected Pujehun District Chairman for SLPP and numerous other top SLPP stalwarts.

Unfortunately, the much anticipated presence of the partys last flagbearer and leader, Solomon Berewa was not possible as he suffered the sudden loss of his driver the night before. However, his running-mate, Momodu Koroma was very visible alongside his wife Mrs. Stella Koroma.

What emerged clearly yesterday was that although he had left the seat of power for over one year now, the former President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah stills maintain his popularity with a significant segment of supporters of the SLPP. This was demonstrated last evening when throngs of party members rushed to welcome him into the Party HQ. After the programme, Kabbah had to wade through waves of human beings to get to his vehicle as supporters fought to shake his hands enthusiastically.

During his address, the former President thanked the executive and staff of Unity Radio for their continuous contribution in informing, educating and entertaining the nation and party supporters.

"We need to come together and accept the contribution made by every personality towards the development of the country", the ex-president said, adding that he joined the party as early back as his childhood days and not in 1995 as some people have been alleging. He added that as a student, he fought hard in ensuring that he established the SLPP branch in England. He also assured that for him, there was only one political party he has ever belonged to and that was the party he would be a member of until the day he departed this earth.

Kabbah commended the method in which the Unity radio management has been running and operating their programs in a very professional manner, especially in their most famous and widely listened program which reviews the local tabloids every morning and evening. Kabbah informed that he never misses an episode of Watin de paper say.

Kabbah also called for unity in the party saying, "If our counterparts see us coming together and doing things in common, they will know that we are a peaceful party and they will want to be with us." the ex-President exhorted.

Officially launching the Unity Fan club, the National Chairman of the SLPP, Alhaji U.N.S Jah stated that Unity Radio is currently a true force to reckon with as they ensure that they educate the membership of the party.

"We know the importance of information and the role of the press in any society," said U.N.S. Jah, adding that the party is stronger than before. He also called on all the contestants for various positions in the upcoming convention to put the interest of the party first in all they do.

Another Speaker was the Womens Leader, Honourable Bernadette Lahai who proved her formidable support in the party with the loud roar of support that greeted her as she was called to give her own address on behalf of the SLPP women.

The Master of Ceremonies was Victor Lewis, Chairman of SLPP Branch in the Aberdeen Wilkinson Road vicinity. He conducted the programme most capably to the admiration of all present.
