Two pupils of the Aberdeen Municipal Primary School in Freetown, Emma Kamara and Mariam S. Kay aged fourteen (14) and fifteen (15) years respectively, met their gruesome death on Wednesday 11th February 2009, when a speeding mountain jeep plying the Lumley-Aberdeen route via the Lumley Beach, rode over them while returning from school.
According to eye witness accounts, the deceased were walking on the footpath when the speeding jeep with registration number ACL 198 and driven by one Mustapha Sankoh, reportedly lost control and jumped over the other side of the road where the girls were. While some reports put it that the accident was caused by over speeding, others suggest that it was due to brake failure.
Eyewitness accounts also indicate that the driver of the jeep, Mustapha Sankoh, is an apprentice at a nearby garage and therefore not licensed.
He is said to have jumped into the vehicle without the knowledge and consent of his boss and the owner of the jeep only to proceed to lose control of the jeep at Aberdeen roundabout, damaging properties worth hundreds of thousands leones before eventually hitting the poor girls. Mariam S. Kay is reported to have died on the spot, while Emma Kamara who was in a critical condition, died later in hospital.
The driver, Mustapha Sankoh is presently in police custody, helping them in their investigations.
