The Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Peopleís Party (SLPP), Jacob Jusu Saffa, has confided in the Awareness Times Newspaper that "it is the will of the people for him to continue as secretary general of the opposition Sierra Leone Peopleís Party".
Secretary General J.J. Saffa said this shortly after returning from the northern provincial headquarter town of Makeni, where the party just held its Northern Region Convention on Saturday 14th February 2009 at the Makeni City Hall.
Among the items on the agenda of the said conference was the declaration of intent for various national executive positions by interested party stalwarts.
The conference which attracted top dignitaries of the party including the likes of Alhaji UNS Jah, the National Chairman, Deputy National Secretary General, Alpha Timbo, Dr. Abass Bundu, Ambassador Alie Bangura, Dr. Kadie Sesay, Dr. Alusine Fofanah, Dr. Bobson Sesay and regional, district and constituency officials, took a fresh momentum when Secretary General Mr. J.J Saffa took the podium to declare his intent to retain his current position in the partyís upcoming national delegatesí conference.
His supporters and admirers countrywide are said to have shouted without ceasing that he should go unopposed as he has worked so hard to get the party on a sound footing despite the shocking defeat in the last general elections.
"That was the moment Iíve been waiting for. I was elected in Makeni and so it was proper that I declared my intention for re-election right there", the elated Secretary General said, adding that "the party needs a character like my humble self at the center of affairs to turn things around".
He reckoned that the challenges ahead are huge, and therefore said he felt obliged to run for re-election to be able to finish the good job he has started.
"It is the will of the people for me to continue to be their secretary general, as was clearly demonstrated in Makeni", Mr. Saffa noted with confidence, adding that "I cannot go against the will of my people".
He went on to state that "the people want me in appreciation of what I have done to keep the party alive. I cannot betray my people. I am prepared to serve them again".
Mr. J.J Saffa has been central in the reactivation and re-organization of the party following the 2007 election devastating defeat.
