Moves to Revitalize SALPOST Intensified in Sierra Leone

After several years in deep slumber, the countrys one and only national postal service, the Sierra Leone Postal Services (SALPOST) located in the central business district of Freetown, will at last wake up to take its rightful place in the socio-economic advancement of the country.

This came to light over the weekend, when SALPOST presented its Integrated Postal Reform and Development Plan (IPRD) themed: "The Sierra Leone Postal Services Reclaiming a Lost Identity", to the Government of Sierra Leone.

According to the Minister of Information and Communication, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, government has embarked on revitalizing the postal sector which he noted has been neglected for long, adding that stakeholders should realize that they are under obligation to provide social services to the people, in fulfilment of long standing promises.

He noted that the postal service is an integral part of the society, adding that the report is the outcome of a request made by government to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for an assessment and capacity building for SALPOST.

Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo noted that government has put in place mechanisms that will make the sector a center of attraction in due course.

He also called on the Sierra Leonean community and other partners, to support government in its development drive.

The Deputy Director of UNDP, Samuel Hardor said SALPOST should not only be seen as a medium for the delivering of loads and parcels, but also a platform for economic recovery.

He said the UNDP is committed to working with the Universal Postal Union (UPU) to assist the government in revitalizing SALPOST, pointing out that the postal sector is to be understood not as a static sector but one that is dynamic.

He ended by pledging UNDPs continued support to the countrys development drive.
