The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is all set to curb incidences of school violence in this years inter-secondary school annual sports meet. This was disclosed to the Awareness Times newspaper by the Head of Police Media Unit, Inspector Ibrahim Samura, in an exclusive interview on Tuesday February 24, 2009.

It could be recalled that the inter-secondary school annual sports meet, which is expected to commence on Wednesday 25th February 2009, has always been flawed with violence and riots, sometimes resulting to lose of lives and properties, and severe injuries.

Organized by the Ministry of Education Youths and Sports, the event is geared towards fostering good relationships among pupils from different schools across the country.

Inspector Ibrahim Samura said the SLP have laid down diverse strategies, to enable them adequately regulate the events in the Main Bowl of the National Stadium and across the streets of the capital city of Freetown and its environs. These strategies, according to him, would be effectively employed in order to avert ugly occurrences as it used to be in the past. "We have put in place a good number of safety personnel, vis--vis crowd control personnel, police support unit personnel, general duty gate personnel, crime intelligent unit personnel, western area traffic management, intelligent officers and rapid deployment personnel, to ensure that the event is peaceful and free of violence," he disclosed.

The police media boss emphatically assured that the police would this time round leave no stone unturned, adding that any pupil found wanton of violence-related activities risks facing the wrath of the laws governing Sierra Leone.

The police, he said, will deploy its personnel in strategic notorious crime areas, and the perimeter of the National stadium will also be manned by the SLP with support of anti violence students movements. "We will ensure that each and every pupil entering the stadium is thoroughly searched," he pointed out, adding that no student will be allowed to enter the stadium with objects like pens, blades, bottles, surgical instrument and other harmful equipment.

Inspector Samura used the forum as an opportunity to send a strong warning to a certain cultic school club called Strength of the Death, of which the police have received an intelligence that the said group is planning to display violence conducts at the event. He cautioned the group in question to call off their leaked demonic plan, adding that the police will stop at nothing to arrest and bring culprits to book.

He ended by calling on parents to advise their children to be law abiding.
