There have been quite a few eyebrows raised in Sierra Leone at the nature of the Cabinet Reshuffle undertaken by the President last Friday February 27th 2009 but one of the appointments that has been received with warm applause and hope has been the appointment of the erstwhile Deputy Minister of Information, Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma to be the new Deputy Minister of Health & Sanitation. The Health Ministry has been plagued with all sorts of lapses ranging from lack of basic drugs at hospitals to poor moral of medical staff.
Mohamed Koroma, who earned for himself the feared name of ĎAgba Satanií and ĎNecessary Evilí due to his no-nonsense and very disciplined approach towards his ministerial work is widely expected to work alongside the new minister to root out the obstacles that have acted as an impediment towards the effective delivery of health care services in Sierra Leone.
"Those corrupt people at Ministry of Health who have been sabotaging the peopleís right to proper health care better sit up and change their attitudes as Mohamed Koroma is now at Health Ministry," Mrs. Hawa Gbenda, an Abacha Street trader opined in front of the Awareness Times offices last Saturday.
The Health needs of the people of Sierra Leone especially the high mortality rates amongst women and children in the country have repeatedly been aired as a primary cause of concern for the sitting President and the First Lady of the Republic. It is expected that the reshuffled team of Sheku Tejan Koroma (from Kailahun) and Mohamed D. Koroma (from Tonkolili) now manning the important Health Ministry will live up to the very high expectations of the populace.
