In Sierra Leone, Armed Men Attack PMDC Spokesman

As we went to press last night, we were almost forced to change our front page when we got a frantic phone call informing us of an armed attack at the residence of the Spokesman for the opposition Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), Mr. Mohamed Bangura. We were later to speak to Mr. Bangura on the telephone at around 1am this morning. He sounded extremely frightened and was barely able to speak as he explained that his younger sister who stays with him in his house along the Freetown-Waterloo Highway, had been apparently abducted by the armed men. According to Mohamed Bangura, the only thing that saved his life was when he climbed up into the roofing of his house after over 20 well armed men fired bullets at his watchman at exactly 11pm last night asking for him. Before the men left, they broke into the house and splashed raw acid all over his residence. Mohamed Bangura says it was the speedy reaction of the police after he telephoned IG Acha Kamara that saved his life. Neighbours of Bangura who also spoke to Awareness Times this morning say the men were firing indiscriminately in the neighbourhood.
