The newly appointed Deputy Health and Sanitation Minister has revealed that there was massive corruption in the health sector during the tenure of the erstwhile Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) led government.

The no nonsense Deputy Health and Sanitation Minister, Mohamed D. Koroma

Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma stated among other things that certain officials of the Princess Christian Maternal Hospital (P.C.M.H) have been collecting drugs at the Medical Stores on behalf of the Jenner Wright Health Center (Under 5) since 2006, adding that these consignments of drugs have never been delivered to the hospital in question.

The Deputy Health and Sanitation Minister was speaking in an exclusive telephone interview with the Awareness Times newspaper yesterday Tuesday 10th March 2009, shortly after ending familiarization visits to various hospitals and health centers in Freetown.

The visits of Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma were aimed at identifying challenges faced by the health sector in the country and to map out the way forward in line with President Dr. Ernest Bai Koromas vision.

Hospitals and health centers he visited include Rokupr Health Center, Jenner Wright Health Center (Under 5), Ross Road Health Center, Principal Medical Office (PMO) at Cline Town, Princess Christian Maternal Hospital (PCMH) and the Connaught Hospital.

Mr. Koroma told this medium that he was able to unearth several inadequacies and wrong doings in the health sector. He accused the Pharmacy Board of not being well directed to its targeted goals, as according to him there are so many things that require the attention of the Board which are left to suffer natural silence.

According to him, it was also discovered that Pharmacists in the Cost Recovery Units of Health Centers and Hospitals are selfishly misusing government supplied drugs and are buying drugs from unknown external sources to sell to the general public.

He alleged also that the food that is served to patients is sub standard, as he puts it "The Procurement Unit of the Health and Sanitation Ministry gives contracts to unqualified contractors".

He however expressed determination to speedily look into these issues and act accordingly, whilst expressing commitment to rid the ministry off corruption.
