Parliament on Tuesday 17th March 2009, approved 7 presidential nominees for various ministerial appointments in the current government.

The motion for the approval of the nominees was proposed by Hon. Ibrahim Bundu of the All Peoples Congress (APC).

According to Hon. Bundu, His Excellency the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, made the appointments based on educational qualification and other merits, adding that the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments and Public Service on Wednesday 11th March 2009, interviewed the seven nominees and found all of them to be capable enough to handle the various offices.

The motion was seconded by Honourable Eric Jumu of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP). Hon. Jumu while recommending the approval of the nominees, advised them to be patriotic and work for the interest of the nation.

On his part, the Hon Alimamy Kamara of APC reiterated that the nominees were not appointed on political sentiment, but based on their professional and educational qualifications.

He noted that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Samura Kamara, for example, has a wealth of experience in finance and economic development, adding that Professor Ogunade Davidson is a technocrat in energy and power and has gained so much experience both in and out of the country.

Also adding his voice to the popular call to have all the appointees approved for their respective positions is Hon. Siaka Samai of the PMDC.

The seven ministers approved by the House of Parliament on Tuesday 17th March 2009 are Dr. Samura Kamara (Minister of Finance and Economic Development), Professor Ogunade Davidson (Minister of Energy and Water Resources), Dr. Denis Sandy (Minister of Lands, Environment and Country Planning), Mr. Moijue Kaikai (Deputy Minister of Labour and Employment), Mr. Sylvester Gobba (Deputy Minister of Lands, Environment and Country Planning), Mr. Sylvester E. Hanciles (Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation) and Thomas Lovell (Deputy Minister of Agriculture).
