APC Denies Any Attack on their Offices

Wild rumours spread all over Freetown yesterday March 18th 2009, that an attack had taken place at the National Headquarters of the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) located a few yards from the Government offices at Youyi Building. The unsubstantiated rumour was that supporters of one of the aspirants for the position of the APCs National Task Force Leader, Mr. Foday Government Wharf Mansaray had violently attacked a rival faction whom were located inside the APC Party Headquarters and who supported another aspirant for the position of the APCs National Task Force Leader with threats allegedly being made that the Foday Government Wharf faction will burn down the APC building. However, when this newspaper sent a team of capable journalists including our Head of Political Affairs, Theophilus Gbenda and ace photo-journalist, Bampia J. Bundu to the scene, there was not the remotest sign of any violence at the APC Partys Offices. All was calm and people were going about their business peacefully inside the APC office.

In a telephone interview later, Mr. Cornelius Deveaux, the APCs Editor-In-Chief and lead aspirant for the position of APC National Publicity Secretary, denied the rumours as being "absurd". Deveaux stated that on the contrary, what had happened was that some of the buildings next door neighbours had engaged each other in a small brawl and one of the protagonists had fled into the APC Party office compound to seek refuge.

"It was a domestic dispute between our neighbours. It had nothing to do with us as a party. One of our neighbours across the street was fighting with his next door neighbour and he ran to seek refuge inside the party offices. In the process, he was chased by his own neighbour and a crowd followed them into the compound to separate them. It was a very brief encounter which had nothing to do with Foday Government Wharf. This is just propaganda by people wanting to portray the APC as a violent party," Deveaux angrily took his time to explain over the telephone.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), Mr. John Benjamin also telephoned up this newspaper last evening to deny any involvement of SLPP partisans in what happened at the APC Party offices yesterday afternoon.

"I have just received a telephone call from a very senior member of the diplomatic corps whom I have the highest possible respect for. Diplomats seem to be concerned over reports that SLPP has attacked the APC Headquarters. No member of the SLPP will ever attack any member or properties of the APC as long as I am Chairman of the SLPP," John Benjamin informed adding that he has already sent word to all Constituency Executives of the SLPP around the country to be calm, obey the law and look up to him for leadership.

"This country has suffered too much from violence. The SLPP restored the country back from anarchy and war to a state of total peace with democratic freedoms. We are going to maintain the peace at all times and any opportunity to avoid violence and take the high road is what the SLPP is interested in for Sierra Leone," the newly elected SLPP Chairman John Benjamin assured.
