As Investigation Progresses: Alleged Rape Is A Mere Fabrication - Medico Discloses

Written by By Sia Somsiama (APC We-Yone Press)
PUBLISHED IN FREETOWN TODAY MARCH 20, 2009

As condemnation of the alleged rape of five women that were in the SLPP office past Monday during the scuffle between the opposition SLPP and members of the security forces who had gone to their office to keep the peace intensifies, We Yone instituted an investigation to ascertain the veracity of the allegation and was able to speak to one of the medical officers at Rainbow Center to where the Police referred the alleged victims and a nurse at the private clinic at Edwards Street where they are reportedly hospitalized by the leadership of the opposition SLPP, both of whom appealed for anonymity, and it is beginning to surface that the allegation of rape is a mere fabrication by the opposition SLPP to gain public sympathy after another apparent failed strategy to provoke public disorder of a national dimension so as to warrant the intervention of the military and the subsequent overthrow of the APC Government of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

The view that the allegation of rape is a mere fabrication has also been confirmed by the Police who are finding it difficult to establish circumstantial evidences to justify that indeed rape took place and that the alleged victims were indeed raped.

The medical officer at the Rainbow Center told We Yone that the alleged rape victims may not have been raped even though the medical examination reveals that they may have had multiple sex within the last eighteen hours before they were brought into the center at about mid-day on Monday for examination.

He stated that it does not necessarily mean that the discovery that the victims had had multiple sex was as a result of rape since the examination did not discover any sign of forced entry of the penis into the vagina.

He suggested that these women may have had multiple sex within the past eighteen hours with different men opining that such is common with commercial sex workers. "An average commercial sex worker can have sex with an average of eight men within eighteen hours", he said.

He confided with We Yone that when the alleged rape victims were brought into the center and taken for examination he discovered that they had their underwear on. "It was then I began to doubt the veracity of their allegation since it is impossible for a woman to be raped without having her underwear torn apart", he confided.

He further told We Yone that when it was reported to the SLPP leadership that after proper medical examination the allegations of rape may not be true the leadership of the opposition SLPP frowned and decided to take the alleged victims to another hospital at Edwards Street.

His observation that the alleged victims may not have been raped was further confirmed by a nurse at the Edwards Street private hospital who told We Yone that the medical examination conducted on the vagina of the women shows no sign that they were actually raped.

She explained that though the women were observed to have had multi sex it couldn't be ascertained medically that they were raped since one of the major signs of rape is that damage is usually done to the veins of the walls of the vagina.

"There was no damage done to the veins on the walls of the vagina suggesting that they may have had casual multiple sex and were not raped", she affirmed to We Yone trying as best as possible to explain every technical terminology in the simplest terms.

She further disclosed to We Yone that it seem as if the alleged victims do not have relations since no family member has ever visited them since they were brought into the hospital. "It is only executive members of the SLPP that visit the alleged rape victims. They therefore seem to have no other relations", she querried.

A disadvantaged and marginalized youth residing at the Wallace Johnson Street bus station, which is just five minutes walk from the SLPP HQ, disclosed to We Yone that most of the women that were in the SLPP office were commercial sex workers pointing out that the opposition HQ is usually transformed into a brothel at night.

"The SLPP office and many other big offices in this area are usually transformed to brothels at night", he asserted.

He maintained that it is no secret to the night police security patrol team that the entire Wallace Johnson Street, from the bus station right onto Peter's Brook market and King Jimmy, is a meeting point for call girls must of whom idle their time at the opposition SLPP party HQ during the day.

This was again confirmed by a staff at KPMG and an officer at the military naval base in confidentiality.

Commenting on the allegation of rape all three the aspirants for the leadership of the APC National Women's Congress condemned the act if the allegations were found to be correct. They maintained that such violence against women is totally unacceptable especially now that the APC Government has enacted several bills that are directed towards protecting the rights of women.

They however described the allegations, if found to be untrue, as unwarranted and an affront to womanhood.

At a press conference held at the Ministry of Information today Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG Munu told journalists it is too early to say whether the allegations of rape are true. "The police is yet to establish whether rape took place or not" he informed the press conference stating that the police is still looking out for items of evidential value and further assessing whether under the prevailing circumstance then it would have been possible for rape to take place though he doubted it very much.
