The widely trumpeted airlifting of a huge consignment of badly needed drugs by the Government of Sierra Leone to provide much needed treatment for victims of the Sunday 22nd March 2009 Oil Refinery inferno that claimed the lives of many, landed yesterday Thursday 26th March 2009 at the Mammy Yoko Helipad in Freetown, as earlier assured by the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Mohamed D. Koroma.

Speaking to the Awareness Times Newspaper yesterday, Deputy Minister Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma intimated that the drugs that arrived in the country far exceeds the US$150,000 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars) worth of drugs ordered, adding that the drugs in question were donated by the Ghanaian Government.

"The assorted emergency drugs were initially proposed by President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, but his Ghanaian counterpart decided to take up the challenge", he noted, adding that the Government of Sierra Leone only spent the sum of US$45, 000 (Forty Five Thousand United States Dollars) as fare to airlift the drugs.

Deputy Minister Mohamed D. Koroma said the remaining consignment of the emergency-purpose drugs is expected to arrive this morning in Freetown.

He sized the opportunity to on behalf of the Government and people of Sierra Leone, thank the Ghanaian Government for such a laudable intervention.

He added that a huge portion of the airlifted drugs will be stored at the Emergency Drugs Store, so as to be able to respond to such emergency cases in a timely and proper manner.

He disclosed that as at yesterday, a total 14 of the badly burnt victims have died at the Connaught Hospital and 2 remain in critical conditions. The incident, according to him, recorded over forty (40) victims.

Mr. Koroma lauded the efforts of all those who have in diverse ways made their contributions towards the wellbeing of the patients. These people, he said, include the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Womens Wing of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and UNICEF.
