In Sierra Leone, Suspended Paramount Chief Reinstated Amidst Protest

The suspended Paramount Chief of Diang Chiefdom in the Koinadugu District, northern Sierra Leone, Sheku Magba Koroma II, has been reinstated amidst protest.

The reinstatement which was sanctioned by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, came three years running, after the chief was suspended in July 2006 by the then Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Sidikie Brima.

The ceremonies making the reinstatement of Paramount Chief Sheku Magma Koroma II were held in the chiefdom headquarter town of Kondebaia, and graced by imminent personalities including cabinet ministers.

The suspension of Paramount Chief Sheku Magba Koroma II, it could be recalled, happened when he came under widespread criticisms relating to the misuse of power and corruption. This was followed by a vote of no confidence mounted against him by his own people.

Until his reinstatement, he was the subject of an administrative inquiry instituted by the former regime.

His reinstatement was openly challenged by hundreds of youths who converged at Badala village and barricaded the main route in a bid stop people wanting to witness the occasion.

The police had to fire teargas in the air to disperse the hostile crowd.
