The Oil Refinery fire incident that took place on Sunday 22nd March 2009, has as at Sunday 29th March 2009, claimed the lives of thirty (30) people, with several others still remain in life threatening conditions.

Deputy Health Minister

The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Mohamed D. Koroma, confirmed in a telephone interview late yesterday that the official death rate at the Connaught Hospital is 23, while seven deaths are recorded to have occurred at the scene of the incident.

He however hastened to state that the medical personnel in charge of the patients has assured that there is going to be no more deaths, as the remaining patients have the likelihood to recover soonest.

According to Deputy Minister Mohamed D. Koroma, the final consignment of the over US$150, 000 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars) worth of assorted emergency drugs have been airlifted to Sierra Leone, and that they now have enough stock at hand to respond to similar disasters in the future.

He stated that a vital part of the drugs has been handed over to the Head of Connaught Hospital, Dr. T.B. Kamara, adding that he has also requested from the Chief Medical Officer, Mr. Sidique Daoh to provide space at the Connaught Hospital for the emergency-purpose drugs to be stored.

Mr. Mohamed D. Koroma also divulged to the Awareness Times Newspaper that President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has issued a stern warning that he will be very annoyed if a single drug gets missing from the emergency consignment, saying "I am personally going to see to it that these drugs are not tampered with for any other reason other than the purpose for which they are intended".

He used the forum to express his profound sympathy to the families of all those who have lost their lives as a result of the unfortunate incident and at the same time thanked all those who in diverse ways have contributed towards the wellbeing of the victims since they were hospitalized.
