The Government of the United Kingdom (UK), through it Department for International Development (DFID), on Thursday 2nd April 2009, donated the sum of Twenty Eight Million British Pounds to the Government of Sierra Leone.

Presenting the donation at State House, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Development in the British Government, Hon. Ivan Lewis, expressed elation over his coming to Sierra Leone for the first time. He stated that the donation is meant to reaffirm and strengthen the cooperation between the British Government and Sierra Leone, adding that his government is well committed in helping Sierra Leone in all fronts. He mentioned that the British Government is very much impressed with the progress made so far, by the Government of Sierra Leone, as the country is just emerging from a devastating war. The successful transition of governments in Sierra Leone is also another respect the British Government holds for Sierra Leone. He also thanked the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma for what he described as a welcoming cabinet reshuffle.

Commenting on the recent outbreak of political violence between political parties in the country and alleged rape in the headquarters of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) in Freetown, Hon. Lewis called on the Criminal Justice Sector to speedily conclude their reports on the matter. "The days of using political violence to solicit political support and to gain power are long gone, and must be stopped in Sierra Leone once and for all", the Honorable advised.

Allocating the fund, Hon. Ivan Lewis categorically stated that the Sixteen Million Pounds is for the improvement of the Reproductive Health Sector of Sierra Leone, whilst Two Million Pounds is allocated to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), to help the Commission in ensuring the promotion of an independent investigation and swift operation of its activities in combating corruption in Sierra Leone. He continued stating that Ten Million Pounds is allocated to the Government as support to the Poverty Reduction Strategy. He stated that their next areas of priority include agriculture and infrastructural development, safe drinking water, health and tourism.
