Palm Sunday Turns SLPP Rally in Kenema

Reports have it that the city of Kenema was on Sunday 5th April a scene of jubilations and celebrations, when hundreds of residents held a procession along the main streets of Kenema. According to reports, the procession held in commemoration of Palm Sunday, nearly converted into an all SLPP political rally when the crowd approached the Hangha Road offices of the party, heading for the Cathedral Church. They were reportedly spotted waving palm leaves and chatting party slogans in front of the offices.

Fire Consumes 38 Houses in Pujehun

Thirty Eight (38) houses are reported to have been consumed by fire at a village called Kakuwalie, in the Kapariga Kabondeh Chiefdom in the Pujehun District. No death was reported. The victims are said to be seriously suffering, as they go without food, shelter and medicine. Most of the victims are said to be seeking refuge in nearby forests and villages. They are reportedly calling on the government and other non governmental organisations to come to their aid.

RUF Sentencing on April 8

Local tabloids have disclosed that the sentencing in the trail of three (3) former leaders of Revolutionary United Front (RUF), Issa Hassan Sesay Morris Kallon and Augustine Gbao will take place on Wednesday 8th April 2009 at 10:30am. Issa Sesay and Morris Kallon were reportedly found guilty on 16 count charges, whilst Augustine Gbao was convicted on 14 count charges. The Special Court for Sierra Leone was set up to bring to book those who bear the greatest responsibilities during the eleven years brutal war that ravaged Sierra Leone.

Death Snatches Radio Manager, 7 Others

Freetown Radio Station Manager, Alex Ransford Fewry and seven others are reported to have died in a fatal road accident, along the Makeni/Freetown highway. According to reports, the Mercedes Benz which the deceased where onboard collided with a van at Yam Kasa village, some few miles to Makeni. The remains of the station manager have been brought to the Columbia Davies Funeral Palour in Freetown, whilst the other seven are said to have handed over to their relatives. Twelve (12) people, including the Assistant Production Manager of the Radio, Martus Abdul Turay are reportedly in a critical condition at the Makeni Hospital.

NEC Announces Official Bye-Elections Results

The Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Dr. Christiana Thorpe has reportedly announced the results of the just ended bye-elections for ward 323 in Pujehun District and ward 174 Port Loko District at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service Television (SLBS/TV), New England in Freetown. According to the Chairperson, the elections were conducted following the death of Councilor Alhaji Alieu AB Feika of ward 323 and Councilor Sulaiman B. Kamara of ward 174. Kallon Amara Samba was declared winner of ward 323 with 687 votes, whilst Kamara Sullay got 838 votes to clinch the ward 174 seat.

Patrick Dangawalli Boosts Old Edwardians Team

Patrick Dangawalli, the Vice President of the Old Edwardians Football Team in the United States of America (USA) has reportedly donated football equipment worth thousands of Leones to the Old Edwardian Football Team in Freetown at the School Hall in Freetown. Mr. Dangawalli is reported as saying that the school team made him the man he is today, adding that he will always remain committed to helping the school. Reports say this is not the first time such a wonderful gesture is coming from Mr. Patrick Dangawalli. He called on the players to remain steadfast, whilst calling on all and sundry to support the Old Edwardian Team, financially and morally.

No Senior Secondary School in Bumpeh Chiefdom

Local tabloids have revealed that the Bumpeh Chiefdom in the Moyamba District is without a Senior Secondary School. The Paramount Chief, Charles Caulker is reported as saying that there are primary schools and a Junior Secondary School (JSS). He stated that people in the chiefdom are in dire need of a senior school. Community stakeholders are calling on the Education Minister to put the necessary mechanisms in place for the chiefdom.
