Properties worth million of Leones have been destroyed when Ward 4, the female surgical ward at the Connaught Hospital in central Freetown, was engulfed by fire in the early morning hours of Thursday 9th April 2009.

The fire outbreak which is believed to have been caused by a naked candle, saw patients and nurses at the ward running helter skelter for their lives, and also plunged the entire hospital in disarray.

There are no reports of deaths or injures caused by the fire, but the ward was completely burnt down, including properties belonging to patients and vital hospital records.

Investigations show that the fire would not have been that serious, had there been extinguishers at the hospital.

Further investigations show that the security guards attached to the hospital acted proactively by professionally evacuating all the patients to safe locations before the fire went out of control.

In an interview with Awareness Times, Sergeant Vincent Claudius of the National Fire Force, who was one of the senior fire fighters who engaged the raging fire, disclosed that there were flammable materials in the nurses room, where the fire emanated.

Sergeant Claudius said they were able to arrive quickly at the scene because there was no traffic congestion at the time.

He noted that fire incidences are on the increase in the municipality, saying last week alone, they were able to put off eight fire outbreaks in different locations across the city.

Also present at the scene to ensure the safety of patients was the Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji I.B Kargbo.
