The newly refurbished Maritime Wing (MW) Headquarters at Murray Town, has been officially opened at a grand ceremony held yesterday 16th April 2009.

Commander Daniel Sayoh Mansaray

The facility which was refurbished courtesy of funds provided by IMATT, will host the MW Commander, Colonel Daniel Sayoh Mansaray and other senior administrative personnel of the wing.

The master of ceremony, Commander P.J.B Yokie who happens to be the Commander in Charge of Operations and Training in the MW, expressed profound gratitude to the Chief of Defence Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) for honoring the invitation to grace the opening ceremony, and to IMATT for the great work done in refurbishing the facility.

In his speech, the Commanding Officer of the MW, Colonel D.S Mansaray, thanked IMATT for making possible the relocation of the MW headquarters from Cockerill to the Murray Town naval base, saying it is a move in the right direction.

He said the refurbished building was once used as a canteen, but was virtually destroyed during the war.

He noted that when the MW was established in 1982, it was headquartered at Murray Town, adding however that the events of the war forced it to be moved to Cockerill, leaving behind only the operational unit.

During that time, Commander Mansaray said effective administration and coordination especially in terms of operation, was vividly realized.

He therefore pointed out that the relocation of the headquarters back to the Murray Town base will create a centre of gravity for the effective and efficient organization and management of the MW in particular and the Joint Maritime Committee.

He hailed the wisdom of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Joint Force Command (JFC) for sanctioning the relocation, and assured that he will do his utmost to ensure that the MW maintains its uniqueness in the RSLAF.
