China to Construct Teaching Hospital

The Chinese Technical Team in Sierra Leone will soon start the construction of a teaching hospital for the College of Medicine and Allied Health Science with funds provided by Chinese Government. According to reports, the turning of sod ceremony has been held at the college campus at Kossoh Town. When completed, the teaching hospital will enhance health education throughout the country. The Government of Sierra Leone, staff and pupils of the college have commended the Government and people of China for the kind gesture.

Nurses Trained on Anesthetic Administration

Local tabloids say nurses from the health sector in the country have concluded a training program on the administration of anesthetic at the National School of Nursing in Freetown. The conference was organized by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in collaboration with Mercy Ships. The conference was held in order to upgrade the knowledge of nurses on anesthetic care. Reports say the training will enhance the health care delivery system and reduce the high incidence of infant and maternal mortality in Sierra Leone.

Chinese Doctor in Police Net

Reports have disclosed that Dr. Wang Xiq is currently being detained at the Shell Police Post. According to reports, police raided Dr. Wang Xiqs hospital at No. 46 Bai Bureh Road in Freetown and discovered 23 cartoons of assorted drugs suspected to have expired since 2006. The Doctor was reported to have argued that the drugs were packed for onward shipment to China. The doctor is reported to have been charged to court. Meanwhile, other independent reports intimate that there are other hospitals in the country where patients are given expired drugs.

Koidu Holdings to Start Kimberlite Operation in Kono.

Reports say Koidu Holdings Limited will soon resume its Kimberlitic mining in the Kono District, after 15 months following the suspension of its operations by the Government of Sierra Leone. According to reports, the company has reached a consensus with the community people. Reports say a total of 50% crop compensation due the affected property owners within the Koidu Holdings concession has been paid, with the remaining due by the July this year. During the period of suspension, 500 workers were laid off, and scores of shareholders giving up their shares.

More House for Amputees

Local tabloids have revealed that President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, has commissioned 40 new houses built by Norwegian Friends of Sierra Leone, for amputees and war wounded. Speaking at the occasion at the Makarie Gbanti Chiefdom, the President stated categorically that amputees and war wounded deserve more help, adding that NaCSA is also working hard to ameliorate their plights. He maintained that the reparation programme is specially designed to benefit war wounded and amputees.

Sierra Leone Loses 800,000 Dollars

Local tabloids say rough diamonds worth $800,000 have been seized by customs officials at the JFK Airport in the United States of America. Two US jewelers traveling Via London from Sierra Leone were caught with 28 rough diamonds weighing 1,200 carats, according to reports carried by NBC New York. The diamonds have been confiscated because the jewelers could not produce any certificate from the Kimberley process.

Notorious Armed Robber Nabbed

Allieu Bakarr Kamara of 23E Taylor Street, Peacock Farm, Wellington, has been reportedly arrested by police, as he was about to rob one Lansana Bangura of No 37N Peacock Farm, Wellington, in eastern Freetown. Lansana Bangura is said to have been seriously wounded by Allieu B. Kamara. The robber was eventually arrested and taken in police custody. Police sources say scores of robbers are active in the general area, but have vowed to put all of them under control
