In Sierra Leone, Teenage Mother Dumps Baby in Dust Bin

16 year-old Isatu Bayoh residing at No. 6 Sesay Drive, Goderich, in the outskirt of Freetown, was in the early morning hours of Tuesday 21st April 2009, apprehended by area youths and handed over to personnel at the Adonkia Police Station for reportedly dumping her five weeks old bouncing baby girl in a dust bin.

Speaking to one Michael Kamara who claimed to have known Isatu Bayoh for over two years now, he informed that sometime in 2008, Isatu fell in love with one Lamin Sesay, a boat owner/fisherman, who also resides in the Goderich community.

He said the two were tight lovers until the girl got pregnant. According to him, a serious row broke out between them over the ownership of the pregnancy.

"I was at home one day when I heard them quarrelling bitterly", Mr. Michael Kamara said, adding that "I rushed there to coil down the quarrel and I was able to learn that it was as a result of Lamin denying ownership of the pregnancy".

He went on to state that "I did all I could to restore peace, and I succeeded", furthering however, that since that time, Lamin developed the unusual habit of staying out till late hours and refusing to provide food and care for the pregnant girl.

He also disclosed that Lamin in some cases even abandoned his home for days, without showing any responsibility towards the girl.

The girl, he said, gave birth to a baby girl in March 2009, and had since been struggling to bring her up alone.

The situation however became unbearable for the girl as Lamin had abandoned the home for over one month, and didnt even bother to return to have a glimpse of the baby, which according to the girl is rightfully his.

Mr. Kamara explained further that in the late hours of Monday 20th April 2009, a woman was passing by when she spotted the girl trying to dump the baby.

According to him, the woman shouted to raise alarm, thereby drawing the attention of neighbours who came running to find out what had gone amiss.

Scared by the presence of the large crowd, the girl took to her heels in a bid to escape, but was chased by angry youths and subsequently captured.

In his view, Mr. Kamara maintained that the girl must have been forced to do what she did because of the unbearable suffering and frustration she was plunged into by the denial of the pregnancy.

When Awareness Times tried to talk to the girl at the Adonkia Police Station, she refused to make any comments, and instead rained curses on Lamin who she said is responsible for what happened. "God will surely fight my case", the girl said.

It is not known whether the police are going to charge the matter to court, or whether in fact the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is going to find ways of convincing Lamin to take responsibility of the child and mother.
